Ransomware – malware that locks down devices or files – continues to grow in both quality and quantity. In 2022, global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky recorded a nearly doubling (181%) in the number of ransomware attacks daily, equivalent to 9,500 files encrypted every day globally.

The malicious actors behind these attacks also continue to improve their tactics and tools to make more money…

In Southeast Asia, the latest data from Kaspersky revealed that Lockbit was the most common targeted ransomware, hitting 115 businesses in the region. This number was from businesses that were users of Kaspersky’s B2B solutions, so these attacks were completely blocked.

The Lockbit ransomware group, which is also a ransomware service provider, has been successful in attacking major companies globally and in the Southeast Asia region…

The ransomware created by this notorious group is used for highly targeted attacks against various businesses and organizations. The software is also updated regularly and is now available in Lockbit version 3.0.

“Malicious actors, such as the Lockbit ransomware group, invest significant time in gathering intelligence in advance to determine who they will target, how they will target them, and the optimal timing for their attacks. To help corporate security teams that are currently overwhelmed and understaffed, we have consolidated our multiple security tools into a unified incident detection and response platform called Kaspersky Extended Detection and Response (XDR). This new platform provides multi-layered protection for businesses as well as threat hunting capabilities for existing Security Operations Centers (SOCs),” warned Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Kaspersky XDR promises to be adaptable for organizations of all shapes and sizes. The easy-to-use platform is also supplemented with trusted threat intelligence from KSN (Kaspersky Security Network) to better detect threats that pose a threat to an organization.
