Nestlé Milo barley milk product has the following advertisement: "Now scientifically proven to be more durable. Clinically tested by the Institute of Nutrition"
Scientifically proven results after 3 months
Regarding the content on the label of Nestlé Milo barley milk, the National Institute of Nutrition said that it had cooperated with Nestlé Vietnam to implement a grassroots scientific research project "The effectiveness of physical education combined with the use of Nestlé Milo barley milk supplements on the nutritional status, physical strength and mental strength of students at some primary schools in Ninh Binh province".
Specifically, the research topic was conducted from June 2022 to March 2023, as part of a randomized controlled trial in the community on 576 primary school students in Ninh Binh . This research topic has been accepted by the council for the results of implementing basic science and technology tasks.
Accordingly, the product did not show any improvement in the nutritional status of students after 3 months of research. Physical activities according to the curriculum and the combined use of the supplementary food product "Nestlé Milo Barley Milk" also did not show any improvement in mental status.
The study showed that physical activities according to the curriculum and combined use of the real product "Nestlé Milo Barley Milk" for primary school students contributed to improving all elements of physical qualities such as speed, strength, endurance, flexibility and dexterity of primary school students after 3 months.
As informed by the National Institute of Nutrition, this is a "grassroots scientific research topic", not a "clinical research" according to the professional definition. The National Institute of Nutrition has requested Nestlé Vietnam to "review the use of scientific research results in communication".
This unit also requested that "the Company check and review the communication and advertising content of food products. If there is any information related to the Institute of Nutrition that violates advertising regulations, it is requested to remove it immediately to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the law in communication activities, product advertising as well as dissemination of nutritional knowledge to the community".
Nestlé Milo says 'advertising is legal'
Regarding this advertising line, according to official information from Nestlé Milo Vietnam, according to regulations, only health protection foods, medical nutritional foods, foods for special diets; nutritional products for children up to 36 months old need to register advertising content.
"Therefore, Nestlé Milo barley milk supplement product is not in the group required to register advertising content and is not prohibited from advertising," stated the document of Nestlé Vietnam.
The brand also believes that the research results of Nestlé Milo and the Institute of Nutrition are scientific data that have been strictly and objectively tested, complying with the requirements of scientific research.
With the desire to bring accurate and objective information to consumers, the research results have been reviewed by Nestlé Milo to communicate to the public.
Thus, according to Nestlé Milo - this product is a barley milk supplement - according to current regulations, it belongs to the group of "supplementary foods".
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Health, supplemented food is a regular food supplemented with micronutrients and health-beneficial elements such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes, probiotics, prebiotics and other biologically active substances.
By regulation, health claims for dietary supplements must be supported by specific scientific research.
Ministry of Health requires verification of advertisements
In response to this information, on May 19, the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health) issued a document requesting the National Institute of Nutrition and the Dong Nai Department of Health to inspect, verify information and handle advertisements containing clinical trial reports of Nestlé Milo products.
The Food Safety Department said it had received feedback from press agencies about Nestlé Milo products having advertising content related to clinical trial reports of the National Institute of Nutrition.
The Food Safety Department has issued an official dispatch to the Dong Nai Department of Health requesting to check, verify information, and handle the advertising of this product according to current regulations.
