On the morning of October 9th, the Bac Kan Health Center announced the discovery of a hand-foot-mouth disease outbreak at Dong Thang Kindergarten, Bach Thong commune, Thai Nguyen province.
On the morning of October 9th, the leaders of the People's Committee of the commune went directly to the school to assess the situation and direct measures to be taken if any new cases were detected.
The Bac Kan Health Center has directed relevant units to monitor cases, detect them early, isolate them, and provide timely treatment. All children with the disease have been kept home from school.
On October 9th, the school resumed normal classes. The Bac Kan Health Center directed the dissemination of information on disease prevention and control measures such as washing hands with soap or disinfectant; limiting contact with infected individuals; cleaning toys, equipment, desks and chairs, and disinfecting classrooms...
According to the Bac Kan Health Center, as of October 8th, there have been 5 confirmed cases of hand-foot-mouth disease among a total of 106 students in the main area of Dong Thang Kindergarten.
The first case recorded was LTP (born in 2024), a student in the 18-24 month age group at the main campus of the school; the first symptoms appeared on October 3rd and she is currently being treated at home.
The current outbreak is occurring in the 18-24 month old class at Dong Thang Kindergarten. The Bac Kan Health Center assesses that, given the high concentration of people in the environment, the disease can easily spread.
Mr. Ha Ngoc Viet, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bach Thong commune, Thai Nguyen province, said that the People's Committee of the commune has directed Dong Thang Kindergarten and the Health Station to disinfect the school. The school's management and teachers are closely monitoring the condition of the students.
In the coming period, health units will continue to strengthen the prevention and control of hand-foot-mouth disease. The Bac Kan Health Center requests that health stations in the area coordinate to promote the dissemination of disease prevention measures in schools and in the community; closely monitor the epidemic situation; and provide guidance on timely handling and treatment of new cases.
The detected cases must be reported daily to the Department of Infectious Diseases, Disease Control and HIV/AIDS – Bac Kan Health Center for monitoring and compilation.
Hand, foot, and mouth disease is an acute infectious disease in children, most commonly affecting those under 5 years old. It is transmitted through the digestive tract and can easily spread into an epidemic. The disease is caused by a virus; there is no vaccine to prevent it and no specific treatment.
The disease begins with initial symptoms such as mild fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, sore throat, and blisters. These blisters are commonly found inside the mouth, on the gums, tongue, and the inside of the cheeks.
Initially, red spots appear, which then develop into blisters that rupture and form ulcers. Blisters also form on the outer layer of skin, commonly seen on the palms and soles of the feet.
When children develop a fever and blisters on their palms, soles, or oral mucosa, parents should immediately take them to a medical facility for timely advice and treatment.
Children who are sick need to stay home from school to limit the spread of the disease.
