This will be the most modern hospital in Vietnam today and could help the hospital's first facility in Hanoi overcome the long-standing problem of patients sharing beds and being carried on stretchers.
The device is "very new".
After more than 10 years of delays due to various reasons, the second phase of the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital is nearing completion. With over 5,000 billion VND invested in phase 1 for 1,000 beds, the investment per bed is over 5 billion VND. According to Mr. Hung, this is a high level of investment.
"This is a beautiful hospital, with high ceilings and a spacious layout, built on an area of 20 hectares. Many new pieces of equipment have been invested in, and with an additional investment of over 1,000 billion VND in phase 2, the second facility of the hospital will have many pieces of equipment that the first facility does not yet have," Mr. Hung said.
However, as a seasoned surgeon, Dr. Hung believes that a hospital will only be remembered by patients if it provides good quality treatment and service. Otherwise, "just hanging a sign that says 'Viet Duc Friendship Hospital' there won't get any attention; if the quality isn't good, people will go straight to Hanoi," Dr. Hung said.
"Our principle is that the expansion of the second facility will not disrupt the first. We will maintain specialized areas and the distinctiveness of the Viet Duc brand at both facilities, ensuring genuine quality at both. Regarding human resources, we have been training them for the past 6-7 years, and initially, we will deploy 450 doctors and medical staff to work permanently at the second facility," Mr. Hung stated.
Fully operational by Q1 2026
To bring the second facility of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital into operation from December 19th, Mr. Hung said that the hospital has been holding continuous meetings and preparing the resources to operate the hospital.
The Ministry of Health is proposing a special mechanism to the Government for Viet Duc and Bach Mai hospitals, as these two hospitals have two facilities in two different localities. One of the obstacles is the regulated price of medical services; prices in Ninh Binh must be approved by the Provincial People's Committee, while the hospital needs uniformity between the two facilities.
"There are some challenges, but they must be resolved to meet the deadline. By the first quarter of next year at the latest, the second facility will be able to receive and treat patients directly. Due to the nature of surgery, we must meet strict requirements for sterilization and quality control of the operating room before opening," Mr. Hung said.
Accordingly, it is expected that in the initial phase, facility 2 will operate with 300 beds, equivalent to 30% of its designed capacity, in order to avoid waste and ensure that the staff adapts well. As the number of patients increases, the hospital will add more beds, and has already prepared the necessary equipment, consumables, and personnel.
Mr. Hung added that once the Ninh Binh facility is operating stably, the quality of treatment will be no different from the Hanoi facility. This is a very good condition to reduce the burden on facility 1.
No more sharing beds.
According to estimates at the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital, Branch 1 in Hanoi, the number of patients from Ninh Binh (where Branch 2 is located) and neighboring provinces and cities accounts for 30-35% of the total number of patients examined and treated. This number is exactly equal to the number of patients currently sharing beds or lying on stretchers due to hospital overcrowding.
Therefore, if the second facility operates successfully, the first facility of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi will no longer be overloaded. This is a goal that has not been achieved for many years due to insufficient facilities, but with the opportunity to bring the second facility into operation, patients coming to Viet Duc in the future will not have to worry about sharing beds.
