As usual, athletics and swimming were the leading disciplines in the medal race for the Vietnamese sports delegation on this day.
A breakthrough day for athletics.
After winning the opening gold medal on December 11th, thanks to Bui Thi Ngan in the women's 1,500m event, Vietnamese athletics is looking forward to an explosive day of competition today with a host of stars taking to the field.
Most notably, Huynh Thi My Tien, who competes in her specialty event, the 100m hurdles, is noteworthy. At the 32nd SEA Games, My Tien won this event spectacularly, finishing with a time of 13.50 seconds, just 0.02 seconds ahead of her teammate Bui Thi Nguyen.
After two years, My Tien has improved significantly. At the World Athletics Championships, My Tien was the only Vietnamese athlete invited to participate. Although she didn't achieve a good time with 13.77 seconds, the girl from Vinh Long promises to perform better when she reaches her peak form at the SEA Games.
On the same day, athletics also featured the men's and women's 400m events. Middle-distance running has remained the strongest and most dominant force in Vietnamese athletics for many years. Even after star athlete Nguyen Thi Huyen retired, many young athletes are ready to succeed her. At this year's SEA Games, all attention will be focused on the men's 400m, with the rising star Ta Ngoc Tuong.
In the 400m final at the 2025 National Athletics Championships, he finished first with a time of 45.59 seconds, breaking the national record. The previous record belonged to Quách Công Lịch with a time of 45.99 seconds, set in 2015. At the age of 20, Tạ Ngọc Tưởng promises to shine at the 33rd SEA Games, opening up a promising career.
Waiting for the golden rain
Also today, Vietnamese swimming is expected to win another series of gold medals, as swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang will compete for the first time in an individual event. Specifically, he will participate in the 1,500m freestyle race - where Huy Hoang is the SEA Games record holder.
Besides Huy Hoang, Hung Nguyen and Quang Thuan will also compete in the 400m individual medley. They will create a "pleasant" competition for Vietnamese fans. Two days ago, Hung Nguyen won the gold medal and Quang Thuan won the bronze medal in the 200m individual medley. Both promise to perform even more impressively in the 400m race.
Besides athletics and swimming, gymnastics, taekwondo, and rowing will also hold finals today, promising a "shower of gold medals" for Vietnamese sports. Furthermore, shooting, a familiar and strong sport, will also be competing today.
The first Southeast Asian athlete to run the 100m in under 10 seconds.
For the first time in Southeast Asian sports history, an athlete has emerged capable of running the 100m in under 10 seconds. This marks a milestone for the world's fastest runners, following the impressive performance of Thai track and field star Puripol Boonson at the SEA Games held on the evening of December 11-12.
The Star newspaper of Malaysia, along with numerous other reputable news outlets, confirmed this record on the morning of December 11th, after the qualifying round of the men's 100m athletics event at the 33rd SEA Games. Boonson finished 9.94 seconds in the qualifying round and won the gold medal after running the 100m in 9.99 seconds in the final.
