After breakfast, Mr. Long (from Ninh Binh province) was helped by his wife to practice walking in the hallway of the Spinal Treatment Department at the Central Acupuncture Hospital.

At around 9 a.m., the doctor began setting the parameters on the electrostimulation machine, attaching each wire to the patient's lower limbs one by one to stimulate the paralyzed muscles.

"The doctors at the Central Acupuncture Hospital are very dedicated. In addition to traditional Chinese medicine therapies, the hospital has supporting equipment combined with modern medicine, helping patients recover quickly," Mr. Long said.

Combining Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine yields effective results for patients.

Two months ago, Mr. Long, a construction worker, fell from the second floor of a construction site. The workplace accident left him unconscious and unable to move from his lower back to his feet.

Shortly afterward, he was taken to Ha Nam General Hospital (Ninh Binh province) for emergency treatment, and then transferred to Viet Duc Hospital for spinal surgery in mid-October.

Upon examination, doctors concluded that he had a fractured L1 vertebra. Fragments had lodged in his spinal cord, leading to spinal cord paralysis and loss of sensation and movement in both lower limbs. Following surgery, he was transferred to the Central Acupuncture Hospital for rehabilitation treatment.

"From being bedridden, I can now practice walking with the help of assistive devices. My health has improved significantly. Although the recovery process is still long, I believe I will soon be able to walk normally again to continue earning a living," Long said.

At the end of the 15-minute treatment session, Dr. Pham Duy Cuong (Spinal Treatment Department) kindly inquired about the male patient's health. He said that the patient's optimistic smile was the joy and motivation for the doctors and nurses.

The foundation of treatment at this leading medical facility is acupuncture, inherited from generations of renowned doctors who have dedicated themselves to research. Currently, the departments and wards are oriented towards combining Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western Medicine (modern medicine), as each method has its own advantages.

According to Dr. Cuong, the electrotherapy machine is a device imported from Japan, combining electrotherapy and acupuncture , utilizing modern techniques combined with traditional medicine.

When in operation, the machine directly affects muscle groups, stimulating movement in paralyzed areas. For weak muscle groups, the machine performs passive exercises, supporting physical therapy to help the muscles move.

"The combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine is a trend in treatment. We cannot ignore Western medicine or downplay the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine. When these two methods are combined and complement each other, the treatment process will bring positive results for patients," Dr. Cuong emphasized.

At the Central Acupuncture Hospital, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine are seamlessly integrated. Accordingly, Western medicine and physiotherapy help alleviate the acute symptoms of patients. The hospital has invested in and purchased modern equipment for physiotherapy.

According to Doctor Cuong, after the acute symptoms subside, doctors use Traditional Chinese Medicine methods to maintain and improve the patient's health, such as massage, acupressure, and acupuncture. The hospital also uses various Traditional Chinese Medicine medications to help increase blood circulation in the body.

Modern medical conditions such as sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and alcohol addiction are also being treated by doctors here using therapy and acupuncture.

According to Specialist Doctor Nguyen Van Thuy (Director of the Center for Addiction Treatment and Sleep Disorders), thanks to treatment using acupuncture combined with massage and acupressure, many insomnia patients can sleep well and no longer have to rely on medication.

"Typically, when suffering from insomnia, patients tend to self-medicate based on word-of-mouth recommendations. Initially, sleeping pills induce drowsiness, but long-term use leads to drug dependence."

"At the center, we use acupuncture to stimulate acupoints to regulate blood circulation, reduce stress, and improve natural sleep," Dr. Thuy emphasized.

Furthermore, the Center's alcohol addiction treatment protocol has proven effective, helping patients rediscover joy in life, improve their health, and return to a normal routine.

Alongside the increasingly modern, clean, and beautiful infrastructure, the Central Acupuncture Hospital has put into use a hyperbaric oxygen system.

This is a medical method that uses pure oxygen at a higher-than-normal pressure in a specialized chamber (hyperbaric chamber), helping to deliver a large amount of oxygen to the body, penetrating deep into tissues, restoring function, and supporting the treatment of many dangerous conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning, slow-healing wounds, brain injuries, stroke sequelae, and tissue infections.

The hyperbaric oxygen chamber at the Central Acupuncture Hospital serves 8 patients per day. Each patient receives this treatment for approximately 40 minutes.

At the Central Acupuncture Hospital, the equipment supporting diagnosis and treatment meets the requirements of a leading specialized hospital, including: MRI, electromyography, limb and cerebral blood flow measurement, electroencephalography, bone density measurement, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, etc.

Over the years, the hospital has established a Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Unit. Here, doctors perform advanced techniques and surgeries (major and minor) included in the list approved by the Ministry of Health. Treatment is also provided for patients who voluntarily seek cosmetic procedures at the Central Acupuncture Hospital.

International cooperation and modern facilities

The Central Acupuncture Hospital is a first-class specialized hospital specializing in acupuncture, under the Ministry of Health, established on April 24, 1982. It is a specialized medical facility that accepts initial health insurance registration.

The hospital's predecessor was the Vietnam Institute of Acupuncture. Having gone through many historical ups and downs, the current Central Acupuncture Hospital has achieved many great accomplishments.

The hospital has a capacity of 605 beds, including 355 inpatient beds and 250 outpatient beds. The treatment rooms are spacious and airy, equipped with TVs and private restrooms. The canteen serves tea and coffee for family members, and free Wi-Fi is available.

The hospital has 7 councils, 3 centers, 8 functional departments, 21 clinical departments, 5 paraclinical departments, and an acupuncture journal.

Over the past period, recognizing its mission as a central-level hospital, the Central Acupuncture Hospital has consistently improved its capabilities and provided the highest level of support to lower-level facilities, adhering to the principle: "Patient satisfaction is paramount."

The team of doctors uses traditional medicine methods combined with modern medicine such as acupuncture, massage, acupressure, hydroacupuncture, thread embedding, rehabilitation, Qigong, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, pulse diagnosis, and herbal medicine prescriptions… to minimize side effects and complications in treatment.

With their experience and medical knowledge, the doctors have developed specialized treatment protocols to effectively treat complex conditions such as hemiplegia, spinal disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, physiological dysfunction, nerve disorders, cerebral palsy, autism, developmental delay in children, sleep disorders, depression, and alcohol and drug addiction treatment.

Currently, the hospital has acupuncture cooperation relationships with more than 40 countries worldwide in the areas of diagnosis and treatment, as well as scientific research, guidance for lower-level healthcare facilities, and the compilation of medical literature.
