In residential area 5A, the area with the highest concentration of flower and ornamental plant growers in Phu Van ward, Mr. Tran Van Quang's family is busily pruning and shaping nearly two acres of kumquat and peach trees. The lush green kumquat trees, with their round, glossy fruits beginning to turn yellow, signal a promising Tet (Lunar New Year) season. This is a crucial stage; growers must carefully prune and care for the trees using the correct techniques to ensure beautiful shapes, evenly ripened fruit, and flowers blooming just in time for Tet. Last year, Mr. Quang's family earned over 1 billion VND from their kumquat and peach orchards.
“Our Phu Van flower village has existed for a long time. Therefore, the plants and flowers from our village have become well-known to consumers everywhere. That's why we villagers always focus on preserving and promoting the traditions passed down from our ancestors. Like other households in the village, we are now ready to serve the upcoming Lunar New Year market and hope for a bountiful harvest,” Mr. Tran Van Quang said enthusiastically.

Also in Hamlet 5A, in recent days, Mrs. Pham Thi Nga's family has planted 5 sao (approximately 60,000 plants) of chrysanthemums, which are expected to bloom profusely in time for the twelfth lunar month. Growing chrysanthemums is a labor-intensive and meticulous job. For Mrs. Nga, the greatest joy each Tet season is seeing the rows of golden chrysanthemums stretching across the fields – the result of many days of diligent labor and also the motivation for her to continue with the profession.
Ms. Pham Thi Nga added that, as a tradition in Phu Van area, from September to October of the lunar calendar, local flower growers complete planting various types of flowers to be ready for sale before, during, and after Tet (Lunar New Year). They grow traditional flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, carnations, etc., and also expand to include high-end flowers such as lilies, gladioli, gerberas, petunias, and other varieties to sell at higher prices and increase their income.
Phu Van Flower Village is actually a fertile alluvial plain situated at the confluence of three rivers (Day River, Nhue River, and Chau River). For a long time, this has been an ideal location with soil suitable for growing various types of flowers. Therefore, families have long formed a flower-growing village after switching from rice cultivation to flower and ornamental plant farming. Currently, Phu Van has over 300 households growing flowers on nearly 40 hectares of land.

Especially after the province's merger, households in Phu Van ward have clearly defined their direction in agricultural development: leveraging the strengths of traditional flower and ornamental plant cultivation, combined with the application of scientific and technological advancements to produce in a modern and sustainable manner. Many households have boldly invested in new technologies, built greenhouses and net houses, installed drip irrigation systems, and applied modern care and shaping techniques to ensure healthy plant growth and attractive designs, meeting the increasingly high demands of the market. This has brought in hundreds of millions of dong in income per household annually, with some achieving revenues exceeding 1 billion dong per year.
According to Ms. Le Thi Quynh Hoa, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Phu Van Ward, Ninh Binh Province, in order to preserve and maintain the traditional flower and ornamental plant cultivation craft village, and to orient agricultural development in a harmonious and efficient manner in conjunction with the urbanization process, the Phu Van Ward Party Committee focuses on organizing and implementing a craft village preservation program in the area; including planning, orientation, and specific solutions for production areas and traditional flower cultivation craft villages in the locality.
The ward will focus on planning and developing concentrated high-tech production areas, promoting the development of smart agriculture, creating favorable conditions for households in the area to invest in high-tech agriculture, connecting agricultural production areas with tourist destinations, in order to bring about sustainable development of the ward's agriculture.

The Phu Van flower brand is now known not only to the people of Ninh Binh but also sold in many other provinces such as Hanoi, Hung Yen, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, etc. The income of flower-growing households here has increased significantly. Growers are assured of a market for their produce because the commune has the Phu Van Agricultural Service Cooperative, which specializes in purchasing flowers from farmers to prevent price manipulation during bumper harvests.
According to flower growers, the price of flowers is expected to increase by about 10% this year due to recent floods that have damaged many flower-growing villages in the northern provinces, including some flower-growing areas in Ninh Binh province.
These days, the people of Phu Van are busy cultivating and tending to their flowers, hoping for a successful Tet flower crop, ensuring both high yield and good quality to serve the market.
