Although wrapping banh chung and banh tet in Vietnam requires a lot of effort, two foreign guests admitted that these cakes have a delicious flavor, worthy of being a favorite traditional dish during Tet.
Jongrak is a Korean content creator who has lived in Ho Chi Minh City for nearly 6 years.
In the most recent video shared on his YouTube channel with over 1 million followers, Jongrak visited a famous banh chung shop on Cong Hoa Street (Tan Binh District) to experience wrapping the traditional Vietnamese cake during Tet.
Jongrak said that he has lived and worked in Vietnam for 6 years but has not yet known how to wrap banh chung. Therefore, this year, he wants to try to conquer this cake to better understand the traditional Tet culture in the S-shaped land.
At the store, Jongrak was introduced by the owner and staff about the ingredients for making banh chung such as dong leaves, green beans, pork, and sticky rice.
After that, the Korean guest was enthusiastically guided through each step, from how to arrange the leaves, wrap the cake, and adjust the mold to ensure the finished product is sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.
The owner of the restaurant, who is from Phu Tho, said that banh chung must be wrapped carefully and tightly so that it does not fall apart when cooked. The cake is of good quality when it is evenly cooked inside and has a beautiful appearance.
Jongrak quickly learned and followed the instructions, wrapping a cake himself. However, he admitted that wrapping banh chung was quite difficult, requiring skill and effort.
After several attempts, he was able to complete one cake. The Korean guy promised to try wrapping the cake again next year to be able to do it more skillfully and professionally.
Here, he also bought and tasted a cooked banh chung. The cake weighed 1kg and cost 95,000 VND.
When peeling the cake, Jongrak was delighted because the banh chung gave off a distinctive aroma and the light green crust from dong leaves was very beautiful.
He used a bamboo stick to cut the cake and excitedly tasted the first piece.
“Banh Chung is very delicious, sticky and fragrant. I want to bring Banh Chung back to Korea to invite my family to experience this traditional Vietnamese dish,” the Korean guest shared.
Similar to Jongrak, Lawrence Mak (Canadian) was also excited to experience making banh tet - a typical dish of Southern people during Tet.
He visited a traditional banh tet shop in Ho Chi Minh City and was instructed by the owner on how to wrap this cake.
According to Lawrence's observation, unlike banh chung, banh tet is more diverse. The crust can be colored with purple leaves or pandan leaves, while the filling includes sweet and salty fillings, with a variety of flavors such as banana, peanuts, green beans, and mixed (pork belly, dried shrimp, Chinese sausage, salted eggs).
The Canadian customer watched carefully and wrapped the cakes according to the instructions. He was very happy when he successfully wrapped a few small cakes.
After wrapping, he was also invited to taste different flavors of banh tet and was surprised by the attractiveness of the dish from taste to appearance.
“Banh tet is so delicious, it has enough salty, sweet and slightly chewy flavors. I like the traditional filling the most with soft green beans, fatty pork, fragrant sticky rice, and well-seasoned spices,” Lawrence shared.
He also revealed that he had previously enjoyed banh chung and loved both traditional Vietnamese cakes during Tet.
According to him, each type of cake has a different shape and flavor but all contain unique traditional cultural values.
