The archaeological excavation at Ba Ngo Pagoda area was conducted from May 3 to June 3, 2024. The archaeological activities were carried out by the Institute of Archaeology, Trent University and the Department of Culture and Sports of Ninh Binh province.
The archaeological excavation was carried out on an area of 8m2, 30cm-70cm deep. The purpose of the excavation is to study and research the ecological and social history including population patterns, agricultural activities and water resource management in the ancient capital of Hoa Lu in the 10th century. The program conducts archaeological studies in the suburbs and the outer belt area of the center of Hoa Lu citadel. During the excavation, scientists collected about 1,400 pieces of artifacts, including pieces of bricks, tiles, ceramics, burnt soil, iron scraps, iron ore, slag, animal bones, mollusk shells, etc.
Through research by domestic and foreign scientists, the value of artifacts showing the daily life of ancient Hoa Lu residents in the 10th century has been initially shown, including the iron smelting furnace and living area as well as the ground reinforcement techniques in low-lying conditions of Hoa Lu residents.
The information and value of archaeological excavations will be important data providing more valuable information for researchers and historians to deepen the scientific, historical, cultural, social values... of the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital heritage in national history.
