Hanoi plays the role of the largest cultural center in the country. In addition to the central art troupes and art schools located in the area, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports alone is in charge of six theaters, including: Thang Long Music and Dance Theater, Thang Long Puppetry Theater, Hanoi Drama Theater, Hanoi Cheo Theater, Hanoi Opera House, Hanoi Circus and Variety Theater.
Hanoi also has a rich treasure of folk arts, with hundreds of active clubs such as: Xam, Ca Tru, water puppetry, dry puppetry, rowing, drum singing, drum bong dancing, Ai Lao singing and dancing..., in which, many types of traditional performing arts are priceless intangible cultural heritage, bearing the soul of Thang Long-Hanoi culture. This is a rich resource for the cultural industry.
Over the years, the city’s art units and folk art clubs have made many positive contributions to the development of the cultural industry. Notably, the Thang Long Water Puppetry Theatre has a record of being “on” 365/365 days a year.
In addition to classic plays, theaters also create programs and specialized plays for tourists . For example, Hanoi Cheo Theater has put into operation to serve tourists the play "Long Thanh Performance" with many unique folk performances of the Northern Delta rice civilization, as well as stories about the ancient land of Thang Long. Hanoi Cai Luong Theater has implemented the program "Cai Luong - Quintessence of Vietnamese Art" with unique Cai Luong performances, elaborately staged to recreate classic passages, songs, and melodies...
In addition, folk art clubs also have many diverse activities, typically the Dong Kinh Co Nhac group, which gathers many famous singers and musicians of traditional music to perform in the old town; Xam singing, Ca Tru singing programs, performances by Dao Thuc water puppetry troupe... have all built their brands. Hanoi has also begun to have programs that attract international attention such as Moon Soon (Monsoon).
According to experts, in the development of the cultural industry, the performing arts industry not only contributes to preserving and promoting the value of identity, but also is the core force in creating high-value cultural products, meeting the requirements of economic development and international integration. However, reality shows that the performing arts industry is currently facing many challenges: Performance products lack competitiveness, technology application is limited, attracting young audiences is not effective...
In order for the performing arts industry to take the lead in developing the capital’s cultural industry, many breakthrough solutions are needed in the coming time. Director of the Thang Long Music and Dance Theater Huynh Tan Minh said: “Most of Hanoi’s theaters are quite small, with about 100-600 seats. Hanoi needs a large-scale theater; performing arts need to be combined with technology.
Creative ideas will be hindered without modern sound, lighting, stage equipment... to create unique visual and audio experiences. Use augmented reality and virtualization technology to create unique interactive performance experiences for the audience.
Audiences can participate in the story, interact with the artists and the performance environment. We also need to encourage collaboration between artists, producers and designers from different fields such as music, fashion, painting, contemporary art, dance, theater, light shows, etc. to create unique and creative performances.
Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy (Hanoi National University) assessed that Hanoi's performing arts still lack connectivity, especially between performing units and tourism. We need to have a connection between culture and tourism to create products that increase accessibility to tourists. Hanoi's development of night tourism also increases the space for performing arts to shine. In addition, it is necessary to connect culture with the education sector to have activities to nurture the love of traditional arts of the younger generation.
The fact that Hanoi city is about to issue new regulations on the establishment of cultural industry centers, centers for trade and cultural development, and performing arts will create more space for activities and contribute to promoting the cultural industry in the area.
