"Spring opening" of fields and gardens with farmers

Việt NamViệt Nam06/02/2025

After the warm and happy Tet holidays, farmers in Thai Nguyen province are eager to go to the fields and gardens to start the spring. This not only helps ensure the right time frame for the crop but also reflects the beauty of labor in Vietnamese culture, praying for favorable weather and bountiful harvests.

Right after Tet, farmers in Nam Hoa commune (Dong Hy) urgently went to the fields to sow spring rice.
Right after Tet, farmers in Nam Hoa commune (Dong Hy) urgently went to the fields to sow spring rice.

In the fields of Chi Son, Goc Thi, Bo Suoi hamlets, Nam Hoa commune (Dong Hy), these days, farmers are busy preparing the land and transporting rice seedlings for planting.

Mr. Hoang Van Tho, in Bo Suoi hamlet, said: Currently, the water source for production is somewhat difficult, so when there is a schedule to take water, people all rush to the fields to finish it all at once. My family has 5 sao of rice fields scattered across the fields. Last year, the yield and output of rice were insignificant due to the impact of storms, floods and epidemics. This year, my family and the people here planted all the new rice varieties (Japanese rice variety JO1), hoping for a good crop.

Nam Hoa is a commune with a large rice area in Dong Hy district, with a concentrated production field of over 100 hectares. This is also the first commune in the district to successfully implement the model of large-scale fields and single-variety fields since 2016.

Since then, the local government has directed people in hamlets with concentrated rice growing areas to maintain production of one type of rice variety per crop, in which Japanese rice varieties JO1 and JO2 have been widely grown by people in recent years.

Even during the Tet holidays, people still regularly visit their fields and maintain the care of their crops and livestock. This year's Lunar New Year comes early, coinciding with the time when crops grow and develop strongly, so care is even more important.

Looking at the field of baby melons growing green and competing to bear fruit, Mr. Vi Van Quy (La Duong hamlet, Lau Thuong commune, Vo Nhai) excitedly said: For the past 3 years, with over 1 hectare of land, I have gradually switched from growing rice to cooperating with businesses to grow baby cucumbers. This type of plant is suitable for the land here, short-term (about 4 months), easy to grow, care for, and has few pests and diseases. If well cared for, the plant produces fruit regularly, with an average yield of 1.3 tons of fruit/sao, excluding expenses, the income is nearly 12 million VND/sao. Baby melons can be grown all year round. The winter melon crop falls on Tet holiday, so people enjoy Tet but still take care of the melon fields.

Seeing the effectiveness of the model, many farmers in the surrounding area also registered to grow it. Up to now, about 30 households in Lau Thuong have participated in growing it with an area of nearly 5 hectares. According to our records, from the 4th day of Tet, people have started spring, "opened the fields" to prepare the land, sow seeds to start a new melon crop, expanding the area by more than 3 hectares.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Chinh (in group 4, Cam Gia ward, Thai Nguyen city) trims peach blossoms after Tet, hoping that the new peach crop will bring high income.

After Tet, the flower and ornamental plant gardens in Thai Nguyen City are also bustling with the atmosphere of production and labor. At this time, farmers in Cam Gia Peach Blossom Village begin to add new soil, fertilize, water, and prune branches to enter the new flower and ornamental plant season, serving the market demand; transporting peach trees for rent after the Tet display period from other places for care.

Mr. Tran Cong Truong, in Group 4, Cam Gia Ward, shared: My two brothers and I have been growing peach trees for 4 years now with an area of 10 sao, about 200 trees. 2024 was an extremely difficult year for peach growers, due to the impact of storms and floods, many trees died. It was difficult to take care of the remaining trees beautifully, and it was even more difficult to sell them because people generally think that peach trees are rare and therefore expensive. In the last Tet season, we broke even, which was still luckier than many peach growers in the craft village.

The whole province currently has over 301,000 hectares of agricultural land, over 160,000 farmer members, accounting for 86.2% of the total number of agricultural households.

In recent years, thanks to efforts in production, proper investment in key crops, and bold conversion of crop structures, farmers' production has changed positively, and the value of agricultural land has increased. However, 2024 is a difficult year for most farmers when facing natural disasters and epidemics.

Although the weather is increasingly harsh, posing many difficulties and challenges to farmers, they do not give up. Agricultural production households in the area are still making efforts every day to produce, learn, apply scientific and technical advances to production, change the appropriate crop structure, increase product value; put their trust and expectations in a new year with many bumper crops, contributing to the implementation of the overall socio -economic development tasks of the province.
