Quynh Vien Pagoda is located on Long Ngam Mountain (in Thach Hai Commune, Thach Ha District), which is considered the birthplace of Vietnamese Buddhism. The pagoda is associated with one of the four immortals of Vietnamese beliefs - Chu Dong Tu. Legend has it that, on his way to trade, Chu Dong Tu encountered Quynh Vien Mountain. He climbed up to the hermitage on the mountain and met a monk named Phat Quang and stayed to learn magic. After the boat returned to pick him up, Phat Quang gave Chu Dong Tu a stick and a conical hat, saying that these were magical objects. When he returned home, Chu Dong Tu passed everything on to his wife. Tien Dung was enlightened, so she gave up her business and traveled with her husband to find a teacher to learn the way.
The temple has a beautiful view as it is located on Long Ngam mountain, facing Cua Sot.
The three-entrance gate is inscribed with the words “Quynh Vien Tu”. Through many historical periods, the pagoda was combined with the Three Temples of the Holy Mother, Ngoc Hoang, Tran Hung Dao... for worship. In 1968, the pagoda was destroyed by American bombs, leaving only a few wooden panels with Buddha images. It was not until 1971 that the pagoda was rebuilt. In 2013, Buddhists invited monks to guide the worship and separate the Holy Mother shrine.
On the right side of the main gate is a statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara looking out to sea.
At the highest position in the temple is the Tam Bao shrine.
The statue of Buddha Sakyamuni is placed on a lotus pedestal.
The Buddha's birth statue at Quynh Vien Pagoda was found in 1973.
The wooden statue of Buddha's birth, about 40 cm high, is painted red and gilded.
