Moderate to heavy rain is forecast in the province which will affect aquaculture.

According to information from the Ha Tinh Hydrometeorological Station, due to the impact of storm No. 1, from now until the morning of June 13, there will be moderate to heavy rain in the area, with some places experiencing very heavy rain with common rainfall of 30 - 80mm, some places over 150mm. Heavy rain can cause flash floods, landslides in mountainous areas, along rivers and streams; flooding in low-lying areas and urban areas.

Faced with the complicated weather, many aquaculture farmers in Ha Tinh have proactively implemented response measures to minimize damage. In shrimp, crab and fish farming areas in Ha Tinh City, Thach Ha, Cam Xuyen, etc., people are busy reinforcing ponds, increasing aeration, and treating the water environment. People are taking advantage of every hour to spread lime, add minerals, tighten nets, and strengthen water fan systems and backup generators.

Mr. Truong Huu Quy in Ho Do commune (Ha Tinh city) adjusts aeration time to stabilize the pond environment.

Mr. Truong Huu Quy's family in Tan Quy village (Ho Do commune, Ha Tinh city) is raising more than 4,000m² of aquatic products including white-leg shrimp, crabs and various types of fish. This is a sensitive stage because the crabs are 1 month old, the shrimp have just passed the nursery stage, and are susceptible to shock if the pH, salinity or water temperature change suddenly due to heavy rain.

“I have been proactively treating the water since yesterday by spreading lime, adding calcium and minerals to stabilize the pond environment. Today, I will continue to increase the frequency of water fans to ensure the amount of dissolved oxygen for shrimp and crabs. If I am not proactive, after a heavy rain, the rapid change in the environment will shock the shrimp and cause them to die en masse,” Mr. Quy shared.

Heavy rain can change the parameters in the pond.

In order to proactively respond to the complicated developments of storms and floods, Mr. Vo Uyen (Vinh Loc village, Cam Loc commune, Cam Xuyen) quickly implemented measures to protect his family's pond.

With a total water surface area of over 1 hectare, Mr. Uyen is raising many valuable seafood such as crabs, crabs and fish, all of which are in an important stage of development. Mr. Uyen shared: "If the flood rises, big waves can easily break the bank. To prevent this risk, in recent days I have mobilized manpower to clear trees around the pond, and at the same time reinforce and raise the bank to 4m to preserve the pond."

It is known that most of the aquaculture area in Cam Loc commune has been proactively harvested by local people before the rainy season. Currently, there are only about 10 households still farming in the off-season. The commune government has actively broadcast information about the rainy and stormy situation, and at the same time sent officials directly to the area to guide local people on specific measures to protect their property, cages and minimize damage.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nga (Song Hai village, Thach Son commune, Thach Ha) reinforces cages and rafts ahead of forecasts of heavy rain that may occur in Ha Tinh.

Not only in the pond farming area, in the cage fish farming area on Nghen River, people are also busy preventing storms. Mr. Nguyen Van Nga's family (Song Hai village, Thach Son commune, Thach Ha) is raising 70m² of sea bass, each weighing about 1 kg. It is expected to be 4-6 months before harvest, so he has to protect the fish by all means.

Mr. Nga said: “When heavy rain or floods from upstream come, the water flows rapidly, the temperature and oxygen content change suddenly, fish are easily shocked and die in large numbers. I took the opportunity to reinforce the cages, use parachute cords to tie the wooden frames tightly, and scoop up water hyacinths around the farming area to keep the flow clear. After this rain, I will pull the rafts closer to the shore and install additional aeration equipment to ensure safety.”

Aquaculture farmers proactively implement solutions to limit damage caused by floods.

It is known that the whole Thach Son commune currently has nearly 40 households raising fish in cages in Song Hai village. Faced with the complicated developments of storms and floods, people have proactively tied anchors, anchored stakes, and reinforced cages to protect aquaculture areas.

Reality in localities shows that the proactive and flexible spirit of the people is making an important contribution to natural disaster prevention. From reinforcing cages, treating the water environment to preparing response plans after storms... will contribute to minimizing damage caused by natural disasters.

Before the development of storm No. 1, the industry experts warned that although it does not make direct landfall, the storm's circulation will cause heavy rain and strong winds in Ha Tinh. Therefore, aquaculture farmers need to take proactive measures, especially in areas at risk of flooding and flash floods.

In addition, farmers need to constantly update weather developments, and after storms, they must fully check environmental indicators. For shrimp and fish farming areas, minerals such as salt, minerals, Vitamin C can be added; maintain aeration time in shrimp ponds until the algae population stabilizes again. In case of unusual developments, it is necessary to contact local authorities and specialized agencies for support.
