Inauguration and power generation of Unit 1, Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the morning of August 19, in Phu Tho province, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh attended the inauguration and power generation ceremony of Unit 1 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project.

Also attending were Secretary of Phu Tho Provincial Party Committee Dang Xuan Phong, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Truong Thanh Hoai, General Director of Vietnam Electricity Group Nguyen Anh Tuan.

Unit 1 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project generated electricity and successfully connected to the national power grid at 04:27 on August 19, 2025, on the occasion of the 80th National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

After being put into operation, Unit 1 with a capacity of 240 MW will, together with the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant, contribute even better to the project's political tasks of power generation - regulation - flood control - water supply - transportation. Construction and installation forces at the site will continue to make efforts to complete Unit 2 of the Project in October 2025 and move towards completing the project in 2025.

The Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project is located on the right bank of the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Dam. The plant is located in Hoa Binh Ward, the water intake and the entrance channel are in Thong Nhat Ward, Phu Tho Province. The Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Plant will share the reservoir, dam, and spillway with the current Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. The new construction includes the following items: Channel leading to the water intake, water intake, water tunnel, and the plant.

After completion and operation, the project will bring about the following benefits: Increasing the ability to generate peak power for the national power system, creating conditions for maximum exploitation of the annual excess water discharged during the flood season of the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant for power generation; improving the ability to regulate and stabilize the frequency of the national power system; contributing to reducing system costs; reducing the working intensity of existing generators, thereby extending the life of equipment, saving maintenance and repair costs.
