Difficulty Getting Out of Bed in the Morning: Causes Not to Be Ignored

Many people find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning. The common cause is fatigue or lack of sleep. But in some cases, the real cause may be a deeper health problem.

In addition to fatigue and lack of sleep, reasons why a person has difficulty getting up and out of bed in the morning include:

Morning Inertia

Feeling tired, depressed, and not wanting to get out of bed in the morning can be a sign of a psychological problem.

Morning inertia is a temporary state of lethargy that many people experience after waking up. Symptoms of this condition include difficulty concentrating, slow reflexes, and a feeling of heaviness in the head and body. The difference between morning inertia and normal sleepiness is that this condition can last from a few minutes to a few hours, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

A study published in the Journal of Sleep Research suggests that morning inertia is the result of a lack of synchronization between the body’s internal clock and external environmental cues. Morning inertia typically lasts 15 to 60 minutes. However, in some people, especially those with sleep disorders or chronic stress, it can last for hours.

Depression

Depression and feeling like you don't want to get out of bed in the morning are closely related. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) says one of the common symptoms of depression is sleeping too much, along with feeling hopeless and depressed when you wake up.

In depression, the activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine is reduced, which directly affects circadian rhythms and the restoration of alertness upon waking.

Mental exhaustion

Psychological exhaustion, also known as burnout, is not only a physical fatigue but also a state of emotional and mental exhaustion. People with burnout often wake up feeling exhausted, lack motivation to start the day, and feel like work or daily tasks are a burden.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies burnout as a work-related syndrome that greatly affects the ability to maintain energy in the morning. The feeling of helplessness causes the body to resist waking up and delay getting out of bed as a mental defense mechanism.

It’s important to note that not everyone who has trouble getting out of bed has a mental health issue. It could be due to poor sleep, which is often associated with staying up late on your phone, not having a regular bedtime, or drinking caffeine close to bedtime.

Meanwhile, if the cause is psychological instability, there will be symptoms such as waking up late with feelings of guilt or emptiness, not wanting to start a new day even though trying very hard to do this, and persistent fatigue despite getting enough sleep of 7-8 hours/night, according to Healthline.
