Science and Technology: The Foundation Bringing Petrovietnam into a New Era

World history shows that when a country reaches the time of strong rise, it not only needs to accumulate internal strength and strong cooperation with friends around the world, but also requires pioneering enterprises to act as locomotives, promote rapid economic development, continuously innovate and aim for sustainability.

The above rule is also consistent with the expectations of the Party and State leaders for the Vietnam National Industry and Energy Group ( Petrovietnam ). And to achieve this, there is only one key: Science and technology.

Building a breakthrough mechanism

Over 50 years of formation and development (since its establishment on September 3, 1975), Petrovietnam has gone from nothing to something, Petrovietnam people have gone from apprentices to masters of all key positions, mastering technologies from exploration, exploitation to processing and manufacturing of products in the entire value chain of the Petrovietnam Ecosystem.

This demonstrates the efforts of self-study, creativity, confidence and the spirit of continuous learning and improvement of Petrovietnam officers and engineers.

Aiming to promote Petrovietnam's science and technology development to new heights, scientific research and technology development must be an intrinsic need.

In the context of the country in the stage of development, no member of Petrovietnam is allowed to stand aside. In which, scientific research to create new products of high value, contributing to the development of the Group is an inevitable requirement.

Up to now, no domestic corporation, enterprise or industry has won as many major awards in science and technology as Petrovietnam, with 6 research projects winning the Ho Chi Minh Prize and 4 projects winning the State Prize in science and technology, 46 Vifotec Awards and many initiatives, inventions, and technological improvement solutions spanning the Petrovietnam ecosystem from oil and gas exploration and exploitation - oil and gas services - oil and gas processing - electricity industry and now green energy.

For example, the first scientific research project of the Vietnam Oil and Gas industry to be awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize was the project "Searching, discovering and effectively exploiting oil bodies in the pre-Tertiary granitoid basement of the Cuu Long basin, Vietnam's continental shelf" in 2012.

This project originated from the reality of searching, exploring and exploiting crude oil in our country (at that time, only the Vietsovpetro Joint Venture was successful in exploring and exploiting crude oil), and was considered an unprecedented turning point in the world oil and gas industry. Because our country discovered oil in fractured basement rocks. This discovery completely overturned the concept that oil did not exist in the basement of the previous world oil and gas science.

Since the discovery and start of oil exploitation from the Bach Ho-Cuu Long basin basement on September 6, 1988, over the past 40 years, many oil fields in the fractured basement have been discovered and put into effective exploitation in Vietnam.

During the period from 1988 to 2012, we exploited over 200 million tons of oil from the fractured basement, collected over 26 billion m3 of gas with nearly 6 million tons of LPG and condensate. It is estimated that the total revenue from oil exploited from the basement is over 50 billion USD.

That is an important factor ensuring the sustainable development of Petrovietnam, contributing to ensuring energy and food security and the overall stable development of the Vietnamese economy.

The achievements of Petrovietnam scientists are a source of great pride. However, to have new breakthroughs, it is certain that there must be a new perspective on scientific research.

First of all, it is necessary to distinguish between “scientific research” and “technology development”. In which, technology development is the absorption of technology, development to a new level, better, more suitable to the conditions of the country and people, better serving production and business. The real mission of scientific research is to find new things, new products for businesses, bring about breakthroughs in production, business... contributing to the development of society.

The reason why it is necessary to separate the above two areas is because for businesses, the most important task is still effective production and business, so absorbing new technology and developing technology will be closely linked to production, stemming from the development needs of the business.

Over 50 years of formation and development, Petrovietnam has mastered technologies from exploration, exploitation to processing and manufacturing products in the entire value chain of the Petrovietnam Ecosystem.

It should be emphasized that over the past 50 years, Petrovietnam has not only effectively exploited the country's oil and gas resources, playing a pivotal role in ensuring national energy security, but also created many processed and petrochemical products..., making important contributions to industrial and agricultural production.

For example, two fertilizer factories, Phu My and Ca Mau, are meeting over 70% of the country's fertilizer demand, ensuring market stability, contributing to increasing the value of agricultural products as well as the position of the country's agriculture.

Many new products can be mentioned such as slow-release fertilizers (using nano technology), fertilizers suitable for each soil area in the Mekong Delta, highland areas, short-term soil improvement fertilizers...

To promote science and technology development, Petrovietnam needs to implement three breakthrough mechanisms including: appropriate income; handling risks when scientific research projects do not achieve expected results and distributing benefits from scientific research projects; orienting research to focus on specific areas such as new energy technology (quantum, nuclear batteries, perpetual motion machines), super carbon material technology (hydrocarbon fuel synthesis), seabed mineral exploitation technology (rare earth) and digital transformation technology (big data, AI, IOT).

On the other hand, Petrovietnam leaders have also agreed on research directions to develop the Group under the direction of the Politburo, with appropriate remuneration for scientists, including the recruitment of scientists outside the Group in accordance with Petrovietnam's development strategy to 2030 and vision to 2045.

Science and technology are the foundation

In 2025, Petrovietnam celebrates its 50th anniversary. Based on the development requirements of the country as well as the Group, innovation, application of science and technology and digital transformation are mandatory requirements.

Recently, Petrovietnam also issued an Action Program on "breakthrough in science and technology development, innovation and digital transformation, creating new momentum, improving labor productivity and competitiveness for the Group to make a breakthrough and grow at a double-digit rate".

According to the needs and from the sustainable and long-term development, reorganizing the management model of the operating areas is mandatory, with changes to synchronize with the development needs of the Group and meet the growth goals of the country.

Therefore, in the coming time, the Group and its member units will focus on restructuring towards streamlining, improving effectiveness, efficiency and work performance to ensure the set development goals.

At the same time, the Group will review and evaluate the high-quality human resources in the fields of science, technology and innovation, to arrange them in accordance with the tasks, functions and missions of the units.

This helps the Group to adjust and arrange in sync with the tasks, functions and missions of the units, in line with strategic goals.

The important task in the coming time of the Group and its units is to focus on bringing science, technology and innovation into practice, absorbing knowledge of humanity and the country, turning that knowledge into resources, revenue, profit and specific products.

In particular, with the new name and new identity, Petrovietnam has identified three strategic pillars: Energy, industry and services.

In which, energy is the core, not only focusing on traditional oil and gas exploitation and processing, but also expanding to renewable energy and new energy such as wind power, solar power, nuclear power, green hydrogen, with the goal of contributing to energy security and emission reduction.

The industrial pillar will focus on petrochemical refining, fuel production, environmentally friendly chemicals, energy equipment and mineral exploitation, aiming to increase product value, create jobs and promote industrialization and modernization.

The service pillars include oil and gas engineering, finance, logistics, technology and training, which are identified as areas of great growth potential, supporting the sustainable development of the group.

In the context of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 being a trend worldwide, Petrovietnam always puts scientific and technological research, innovation, and digital transformation as the foundation to help improve competitiveness.

The Group is investing heavily in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, big data, building an open innovation ecosystem, connecting with national and international networks and deploying 10 strategic technologies, such as: offshore energy technology; production of clean fuels, "green" chemicals; production and application of lightweight materials, CNTs, graphene; energy storage; decarbonization...

For example, applying digital technology to management and production, continuously researching and improving technology, Dung Quat Oil Refinery has been operating at 8-15% over its design capacity for many years.

In 2024 alone, BSR recorded 649 ideas and 584 improvements were applied. One of the outstanding solutions that was applied was optimizing the seawater cooling system to help save energy, saving more than 1.9 million USD/year and contributing to reducing CO2 emissions .

Up to now, Dung Quat is a factory that not only supplies more than 30% of the country's petroleum demand, but also ensures the entire fuel source for National Defense (petrol for military equipment and transportation).
