Promoting cooperation in developing flexible power plants

During a working trip to Finland, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Petrovietnam Le Manh Hung and the Group's delegation had a working session with Wartsila Group.

Wartsila - A leading technology group in the maritime and energy sector, representing Finnish businesses, introduced an overview of the Group with more than 191 years of establishment and development, achieving 8 billion Euros in revenue in 2024, present in more than 180 countries. Wartsila is currently the world leader in piston internal combustion engine technology (RICE) - the foundation of flexible and responsive power plants, with more than 5,000 power plants built, with a total capacity of over 79,000 MW.

Wartsila representative emphasized the role of flexible power plants in ensuring the stability of the power system when the proportion of renewable energy is increasing. RICE technology is capable of fast start-up (takes only 2 minutes to reach 100% capacity), flexible load increase and decrease, high efficiency operation (up to 50%) and fuel saving when operating at low load. Currently, RICE engines can operate on natural gas/LNG, blend LNG with hydrogen (25%) and will soon operate on 100% hydrogen, contributing to supporting Vietnam towards the Net Zero target by 2050.

Wartsila representative said that they are cooperating with Vietnam Oil and Gas Power Corporation - JSC (PV Power) in the 600 MW Flexible Power Plant Project in Nhon Trach ( Dong Nai ), and expressed their desire to expand cooperation with Petrovietnam in the fields of clean energy, fuel conversion and engine technology.

Petrovietnam Chairman Le Manh Hung highly appreciated the potential for cooperation between the two sides and proposed some specific directions such as: Researching cooperation solutions in power plants and projects of Petrovietnam and PV Power; Cooperating in replacing diesel generators at Petrovietnam's oil refineries and petrochemical plants with gas-fueled equipment to reduce emissions; Developing LNG engines for Petrovietnam's large fleet; Researching electricity supply for Petrovietnam's energy centers in the three regions of North - Central - South; Applying Wartsila engine technology in Petrovietnam's shipbuilding and maritime sectors.

Expanding cooperation in digital transformation, automation and sustainable energy development

Also on October 21, Petrovietnam Deputy General Director Phan Tu Giang led the Petrovietnam delegation to have a working session with Valmet Group - one of the leading industrial technology enterprises in Finland, specializing in providing advanced solutions in the fields of automation, energy, environment and digital transformation.

At the working session, the two sides aimed to establish a Petrovietnam - Valmet cooperation channel in the fields of: Process technology and automation (Valmet DNA); Energy solutions, energy from waste (WtE), biomass energy; Flow control technology.

Accordingly, the two sides had in-depth discussions on Valmet's capacity, scope of operations and reference projects in Vietnam, and jointly identified cooperation opportunities in upgrading, digital transformation and environmental optimization for Petrovietnam's member units. The discussion content included potential cooperation models such as: providing technology and equipment; cooperating as an integrator and service provider; implementing Performance Agreement packages; transferring knowledge and training human resources.

In addition, the two sides also shared information related to the Long Phu 1 Thermal Power Project, advanced and environmentally friendly digitalization and automation technologies, and cooperation in energy transition and development of renewable energy and sustainable energy projects in Vietnam.

The working session with two leading Finnish technology corporations has opened up many cooperation opportunities for Petrovietnam in the fields of clean energy, digital transformation, automation and sustainable development, contributing to promoting the energy transition roadmap and realizing Vietnam's Net Zero goal by 2050.
