Construction of Phu Cat Airport's Runway No. 2 to begin in August

Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan has just sent a document to the Ministry of Finance regarding the commencement of the project to build runway No. 2 and synchronous works at Phu Cat Airport.

Phu Cat Airport was built in the 1960s and 1970s and began operating civil aviation in 1985.

Phu Cat Airport is located in an area with an important strategic position in terms of defense and security in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions; it is an important military base in the national defense system, so there are regular military activities here and most of the land is managed by the Ministry of National Defense .

The concrete runway has been in use for about 60 years (nearly 3 times longer than its design life), with low load-bearing capacity; currently most of the concrete slabs have cracked, creating a risk of debris causing unsafe operation.

Repairing, renovating and upgrading the runway requires closing the airport for a long period of time (not less than 6 months), which does not ensure the combat readiness of military units. At the same time, it greatly affects tourism activities and socio -economic development of the province.

Therefore, the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) has agreed with the Ministry of National Defense and the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province to plan to add runway 2 to Phu Cat Airport to ensure safe and effective operation. At the same time, runway 1 is always ready to serve the combat of military units. The newly invested runway 2 is also ready to serve military units when needed.

In November 2024, the Government issued a document agreeing to assign the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province as the project investment management agency. In February 2025, the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province issued a decision approving the project investment policy. To date, the province has completed the preparation of the feasibility study report and is submitting the project to the Ministry of Construction for appraisal of the construction investment project according to regulations.

Leaders of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee listened to the consulting unit report on the expected project implementation items.

“Currently, the province has directed specialized agencies to urgently coordinate with the Ministry of Construction to appraise the construction investment project. On that basis, complete the investment preparation procedures, promptly organize the preparation of construction drawing design documents - cost estimates, closely coordinate with the Ministry of Construction to promptly appraise and complete the procedures for approving design documents, strive to speed up the procedures for selecting construction contractors and start construction on August 19,” the document of the Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee affirmed.

According to the Management Board of Traffic and Civil Works Projects of Binh Dinh Province, the investment project to build runway No. 2 and synchronous works at Phu Cat Airport is a group A project, with a total investment of about 3,246 billion VND, of which the cost of site clearance is about more than 1,000 billion VND.

The new runway will be 3,048m long, ensuring it can accommodate Code C aircraft such as the A320 and A321 and can be upgraded to accommodate Code E aircraft when necessary.

According to the approved plan, Phu Cat Airport aims to have a capacity of 5 million passengers/year by 2030 and 7 million passengers/year by 2050.
