VHO - Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong signed Decision No. 1419/QD-BVHTTDL on allowing archaeological excavation at the Truong Luy Binh Dinh relic.
Accordingly, the decision allows Binh Dinh Provincial Museum to coordinate with the Southern Institute of Social Sciences to conduct archaeological excavations at 3 locations of the Binh Dinh Citadel relic in An Lao district, Binh Dinh province from May 23 to June 30, 2025.
The total permitted excavation area is 200m2, including: H4 station site (village 4, An Hung commune, An Lao district) has an area of 68m2 , including 2 pits with areas of 32m2 and 36m2 respectively.
Dong Ham station location (village 5, An Hung commune, An Lao district) with an area of 96m2 , including 4 pits with areas of 25m2 , 25m2 , 30m2 and 16m2 respectively.
An Quang station location (village 2, An Quang commune, An Lao district) with an area of 36m 2 , including 3 holes with areas of 4m 2 , 16m 2 and 16m 2 respectively.
The excavation was chaired by Mr. Nguyen Khanh Trung Kien, Southern Institute of Social Sciences.
The decision also clearly states that during archaeological excavations, licensed agencies must pay attention to protecting the stratigraphy of the relic; are responsible for disseminating information to the people about protecting local cultural heritage; and not announce official conclusions without the agreement of the competent authority and the Department of Cultural Heritage.
For artifacts collected during archaeological excavations, Binh Dinh Provincial Museum and Binh Dinh Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism are responsible for preserving and protecting artifacts, avoiding damage or loss, and reporting to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on plans to protect and promote the value of those artifacts.
After the completion of the archaeological excavation, Binh Dinh Provincial Museum and the Southern Institute of Social Sciences must have a preliminary report and propose a plan to manage and protect the archaeological excavation area within 1 month at the latest and a scientific report within 1 year at the latest, sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Before announcing the results of an archaeological excavation, the licensed agencies discuss and agree with the Department of Cultural Heritage.
In September 2024, the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province issued a document agreeing in principle to assign the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to preside over and coordinate with the People's Committee of Hoai Nhon town and the People's Committee of An Lao district and related units and individuals to survey and build a profile of the Truong Luy Binh Dinh relic to submit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for approval to rank it as a national relic according to regulations.
Mr. Bui Tinh, Director of Binh Dinh Museum, said: The Truong Luy section of Quang Ngai province was ranked as a national relic in 2011, so the provincial leaders directed that the Truong Luy section in Binh Dinh needs to be carefully surveyed and measured to clearly determine the boundaries.
"After completing the procedures, we will prepare a dossier to submit to the provincial authorities to ask the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to recognize the Truong Luy Binh Dinh national relic," the Director of Binh Dinh Museum added .
According to researchers, the section of Truong Luy Binh Dinh running through An Lao district and Hoai Nhon town with more than 14km is an important link in the entire Truong Luy system from Quang Ngai to Binh Dinh, with a total length of 127km.
The Great Wall was built with locally mined materials such as hill soil, rice field soil, natural stone with many techniques of filling, compacting soil, building, and stacking stones... very typical of the residents of the plains, foothills, and mountains.
Quang Ngai - Binh Dinh Great Wall is the longest rampart in Southeast Asia and the second longest in Asia, after the Great Wall of China.
