Mr. Mai Xuan Lam's French pigeon farming model is highly economically effective.
In 2011, after graduating from Hanoi University of Industry, Mai Xuan Lam worked at a construction company in Hanoi. Construction workers live here and there, even on long business trips abroad, but it was at times like these that he realized that this job was not really suitable for him. With the desire to have a stable job with little travel, he decided to return to his hometown to start a business.
At first, Mr. Lam only raised a few pairs of French pigeons for fun. Through the trial raising process, he found that French pigeons are easy to raise, their food is simple - mainly rice and corn, and their meat is nutritious food, so he researched the knowledge and techniques for raising French pigeons.
In 2019, with the help of his family, Mr. Lam borrowed more capital from the bank to invest in the French pigeon farming model. He contracted 3,000m2 of the commune's rice fields to level the ground and build barns to start a business with a French pigeon farming model, with a scale of 120 pairs of parent birds. Initially, due to lack of experience in care, as well as unscientific ways of arranging and building barns, many birds were sick and died. Not discouraged, he was determined to learn more about farming techniques through the mass media. Thanks to his diligence, hard work, and mastery of farming techniques, the French pigeon farming model has now brought about efficiency and high income.
Mr. Lam said: To raise pigeons effectively, the most important step is to select the breed. The selected breed must be healthy, have smooth feathers, be agile and have no deformities. In addition, the barn must also be solidly invested, divided into rows of cages, each row of cages is divided into compartments to raise each type of parent bird, have an automatic water supply system for the birds, and have ventilation fans to ensure the barn is always cool. During the breeding process, pay attention to vaccinations, use probiotics mixed into food, drinking water or spray disinfectants in the barn to reduce odors and increase the birds' resistance.
Compared to other pigeon breeds, French pigeons are easy to raise, have few diseases, and have a high and regular reproductive capacity. Each female pigeon starts laying its first clutch at 4-5 months old, each clutch containing 2 eggs. After 40 days, the female lays the next clutch. On average, each pair of breeding pigeons lays 9-10 clutches per year. Up to now, on average, each month, Mr. Lam's pigeon breeding model produces about 1,500 pairs of commercial pigeons and breeding pigeons; after deducting expenses, the annual profit is over 500 million VND.
According to Mr. Lam, pigeon meat is very popular nowadays. Because it is a nutritious food source, processed into many attractive dishes, the demand is high, so sometimes there is not enough supply. With 6 years of experience raising French pigeons, he can now take the initiative in raising and caring for the birds. However, he still constantly learns and gains experience from farm owners and participates in training courses on general breeding techniques, and pigeon raising techniques in particular. In addition, he is always willing to share knowledge, care techniques, and disease prevention with other model owners.
The French pigeon farming model of Mr. Lam's family is a typical example of young people doing good business, bringing high economic efficiency and being encouraged to develop by the Dong Quang Commune Youth Union. Along with developing the family economy, Mr. Lam actively participates in movements and association activities and helps union members and young people in the area to boldly develop the economy, rise up in life, and contribute positively to the development of the homeland.
