LEARNING AND REVIEWING
Ms. Nguyen Doan Trang, Principal of Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the school has just approved theeducational plan for the second semester, which includes specific content for grade 9 students. Accordingly, teachers of subjects such as math, literature and English will be proactive and flexible in implementing teaching content in the spirit of both teaching new knowledge and integrating the 10th grade exam review topic.
Grade 9 students are in the stage of studying and reviewing for the grade 10 entrance exam.
Ms. Doan Trang shared that final year students have pressures, so they should have their own study plans in a scientific and intelligent way. "This is an admission period that does not give students the opportunity to "wait until the last minute". It is the preparation to study as much as possible, focusing on preparing knowledge according to teachers' instructions, and getting familiar with previous year's exam questions that will help students reduce pressure," Ms. Trang emphasized.
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Dieu, Principal of Le Quy Don Secondary School (District 3), said that the school does not organize separate classes for exam preparation but has a long-term plan. Specifically, teachers of the 3 exam subjects will combine teaching, learning, and reviewing. At the same time, students will be familiarized with previous years' entrance exams to practice their test-taking skills in the exam room.
HOW TO REVIEW EFFECTIVELY?
Master Tran Tien Thanh, a literature specialist at the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, gives training guidelines so that 9th grade students can prepare best for the exam from now on.
Master Thanh said that in terms of reading comprehension, students can choose texts (newspapers, commentaries, science books, etc.) with age-appropriate content, related to current events, to practice skills such as discovering, identifying, and decoding words, details, and images. In addition, find Vietnamese issues in the text, practice summarizing the text; connect the text being read with other related texts, and connect with real life. Give personal opinions on the issues raised in the text, create different ways of expressing them, propose solutions, and come up with new titles, etc.
With a 500-word social argumentative essay, students need to practice argumentative operations of explanation, proof, and commentary. When practicing doing previous years' exam questions, when writing, it is necessary to avoid lacking argumentative operations (for example, lacking explanation of the issue being discussed); applying argumentative operations ineffectively (evidence not close to the issue, lacking analysis of evidence to clarify the issue...), or not drawing lessons for oneself through discussing the issue, the discussion ideas are not rich, not profound, and are sketchy.
As for literary essays, Master Thanh noted that students need to master skills, practice analyzing skills, and perceive literary works according to the genres of poetry and stories.
In particular, Master Tran Tien Thanh pointed out the limitations of candidates through entrance exams, which are re-enacting works, lacking emotion in their essays due to little reading, little thinking, and possibly rote learning. Not understanding the requirements of the questions, mechanically rewriting the content they have learned.

Candidates participating in the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2023-2024 school year
In the math exam, Mr. Duong Buu Loc, a math specialist at the Department of Education and Training, informed that students often have difficulty with practical problems, due to difficulty in reading and understanding, difficulty in visualizing real-life problems such as deposit interest rates, volume, circumference, etc. Therefore, in the learning process, in addition to grasping mathematical knowledge, students need to practice more understanding of practical knowledge.
Regarding English, Ms. Tran Thi Van, a teacher at Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), said that the 10th grade entrance exam does not focus on grammar (accounting for 30 - 40%), mainly on reading comprehension and how students use English.
The vocabulary topic revolves around the program in the English 9 textbook. However, it refers to vocabulary that is more applied and understandable, with open knowledge in the direction of interdisciplinary integration.
Therefore, Ms. Tran Thi Van guides students to master vocabulary, understand words, word morphology and basic grammar points. Practice regularly, from easy to difficult, synthesizing knowledge in the context of solving problems.
Because students often make many mistakes in the Word Forms/Sentence transformation section, Ms. Van instructs students to be very careful with this differentiated knowledge section: "Grasp the position of word types in sentences, write clearly and accurately," Ms. Van advises.
