In an article posted on X, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared, "there is no way Canada will become part of the United States."
"Workers and people of both countries benefit from being each other's largest trade and security partners," Mr. Trudeau emphasized.
President-elect Donald Trump has long complained about Canada's trade surplus with the United States, claiming that the border between the two countries is "an artificial line" and expressing his desire for Canada and the United States to merge.
Mr Trump also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, where 75% of all exports of goods and services come from the US.
At a press conference at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on January 7, two weeks before his inauguration, US President-elect Donald Trump declared that he would use "economic power" to unite Canada and the US.
"This move is also beneficial from a national security perspective. We are essentially protecting Canada," Mr. Trump affirmed.
On the same day, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that the US President-elect's statement "showed a lack of understanding of what makes Canada strong", and emphasized: "We will never back down in the face of threats".
Previously, on January 6, Prime Minister Trudeau announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party, but will continue to serve as head of government until a successor is elected.
The resignation announcement comes as Mr Trudeau comes under pressure from within his party, with recent opinion polls suggesting the party will suffer a heavy defeat in the next election.
The leader found himself unable to be the best choice in that election.
