The celebration of the International Day of Vesak was solemnly held at the United Nations headquarters. |
On May 14, the International Day of Vesak was solemnly celebrated at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Attending and speaking at the ceremony were the Foreign Ministers of Thailand and Sri Lanka, along with many Ambassadors, Heads of Delegations of United Nations member countries, and a large number of international monks, nuns, and Buddhists.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang sent congratulatory messages to the ceremony.
The speeches at the ceremony highlighted that the Buddha’s profound and timeless teachings and philosophy of compassion, wisdom, tolerance and mindfulness remain relevant today, continuing to illuminate humanity’s journey towards a world of peace, mutual understanding and respect for diversity. This is not only a precious cultural and spiritual heritage of humanity, but also an ethical foundation that can contribute to guiding global action and policy.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang spoke at the Ceremony. |
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations, emphasized the profound significance of Vesak to Vietnam, where Buddhism has been closely associated and deeply imbued in the cultural and spiritual life of the nation for more than two thousand years of history, with the philosophy of "protecting the country and bringing peace to the people".
In the context of the world facing many challenges and profound changes, the Head of the Vietnamese Delegation emphasized that the Buddha's philosophy of compassion, wisdom and peace is the compass for humanity to overcome challenges together and build a global community that is united, respectful and sustainable. These are also noble values that reflect the fundamental principles of the United Nations.
On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang respectfully announced that Vietnam has successfully organized the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 with the theme “Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Wisdom for Peace and Sustainable Development”, bringing together monks, nuns and Buddhist representatives from many countries. This year's event is even more meaningful as it takes place on the occasion of Vietnam celebrating the 50th anniversary of national reunification and preparing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of National Day.
The Ambassador sent congratulations to Buddhist communities around the world and called on countries and peoples to spread the spirit of compassion, harmony and tolerance to build a peaceful, fair world where no one is left behind.
The celebration of the International Day of Vesak is an annual event of the United Nations since 1999 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 54/115 on the annual celebration of the International Day of Vesak to recognize the contribution of Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, to the spiritual life of people, as well as to the common efforts of the international community for peace, cooperation, harmony and development. |
