Developing OCOP products associated with environmental protection

In recent years, the “One Commune One Product” (OCOP) program has become a driving force for rural economic development in Phu Tho province. To move towards sustainable production, OCOP products are not only focused on quality and design but also on environmental factors during the production and processing process.

Developing OCOP products associated with environmental protection

My Thuan Agricultural and Forestry Service Cooperative (Tan Son district) focuses on safe production stages and uses glass bottles and jars to package honey.

Phu Tho province has been implementing many synchronous solutions, integrating related programs and projects to promote, provide technical training, support preferential capital and transfer environmentally friendly production technology to OCOP subjects. Subjects participating in the Program are encouraged to transform production models towards safety, environmental friendliness, minimizing negative impacts on the ecosystem and community health. Linking OCOP product development with environmental protection not only demonstrates responsibility to the community but also opens up a direction for sustainable development for agriculture and the rural economy .

According to statistics by the end of 2024, the whole province has over 300 OCOP products with 3 stars or more, belonging to many industries such as food, beverages, handicrafts, community tourism services... It is worth noting that more and more OCOP subjects, including cooperatives, cooperative groups and enterprises, have been aware of ensuring environmental factors in production.

Quynh Lam Agricultural Service Cooperative (Ban Nguyen Commune, Lam Thao) develops bananas on an area of over 40 hectares in the direction of safe, environmentally friendly goods; products meet 3-star OCOP standards, contributing to increasing economic value and building a brand for local clean agricultural products.

Mr. Han Quang Vinh - Director of the Cooperative said: "We clearly identify that if we want to develop in the long term, we cannot pursue quantity while ignoring quality and the environment. Therefore, the Cooperative organizes banana production according to VietGAP standards, minimizes the use of chemicals in cultivation, prioritizes organic fertilizers and biological measures, and aims for an environmentally friendly farming model, protecting land, water and the long-term farming ecosystem."

In the OCOP product evaluation criteria, there are a number of contents related to environmental protection during the production process, including: Compliance with environmental records and procedures according to legal regulations; evidence of waste collection and treatment facilities; use of environmentally friendly packaging; application of sustainable technologies such as technology to save raw materials and fuel, waste treatment and recycling, and recovery of agricultural by-products to minimize environmental impacts.

The inclusion of environmental protection criteria in the evaluation of OCOP products not only contributes to raising awareness among producers about the importance of sustainable development but also promotes the application of environmentally friendly processes and techniques in actual production. Many units have proactively invested in technological innovation, improved processes to save raw materials and fuel, built standard waste treatment systems, and minimized emissions and pollution. In particular, the use of environmentally friendly packaging materials such as biodegradable or reusable packaging is gradually becoming a common trend, contributing to reducing pressure on the living environment and increasing the sensory value of products.

My Thuan Agricultural and Forestry Service Cooperative (My Thuan Commune, Tan Son District) is developing sustainable beekeeping, associated with protecting the ecological environment. The Cooperative has about 2,200 bee colonies with an average harvest of about 20,000 liters of honey per year, the Cooperative's products achieve 3-star OCOP. Mr. Dinh Trong Tam - Director of the Cooperative said: "In beekeeping, the farming environment is considered a decisive factor for the health of the bee colony and the quality of the honey. The Cooperative chooses honey source areas far from polluted areas and pesticide sprayed areas to protect the bees. In packaging, the Cooperative also prioritizes the use of environmentally friendly glass bottles and jars to better preserve the honey and make it reusable."

The results achieved show that linking environmental protection with OCOP product development plays an important role in enhancing the value and competitiveness of products. To continue to promote effectiveness, all levels, sectors and localities need to promote propaganda and support OCOP entities to access green technology, while strengthening supervision of the implementation of environmental criteria in production. This is an important foundation for the province's OCOP Program to develop in a sustainable direction, harmonizing economic benefits and responsibility to the environment and community.
