Effectiveness of grant aid projects

In 2024, we witnessed severe challenges when Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi) and its aftermath caused heavy losses in human lives and property. In that context, with the participation of all levels, sectors and the efforts of the people affected by natural disasters, non-refundable aid projects have become valuable resources, not only helping people overcome the immediate disaster but also creating profound lessons about sustainable development and the power of sharing.

Effectiveness of grant aid projects

People of Tu Hiep commune, Ha Hoa district received support from the project "Supporting multi-purpose cash distribution for people to overcome the consequences of storm No. 3 (storm Yagi ) and post-storm circulation".

Initial statistics have painted a tragic picture: 6 people died, 4 people are missing due to the Phong Chau bridge collapse; hundreds of houses collapsed, had their roofs blown off, were flooded, thousands of hectares of rice and crops were submerged, livestock and poultry were swept away... total estimated damage is up to 1,642 billion VND.

Immediately after the disaster struck, the provincial Red Cross Society quickly deployed emergency relief activities. Volunteers did not hesitate to coordinate with local authorities to assist people in evacuating, cleaning up the aftermath of floods, providing necessities and implementing epidemic prevention and hygiene measures. This timely intervention helped to minimize the initial difficulties for people in the affected areas.

In particular, the Phu Tho Provincial Red Cross Society has become the focal point for receiving support from all over the country and internationally. As of November 10, 2024, the Provincial Red Cross Society has received 310 tons of goods and necessities worth 16 billion VND, along with more than 2.3 billion VND in cash from organizations, individuals and the Vietnamese community abroad. All of these resources have been urgently allocated to the most severely affected localities, helping 11,550 households receive timely relief and gradually stabilize their lives.

Provincial Red Cross officials communicate about clean water hygiene and disease prevention to people in areas affected by storms and floods.

One of the most effective and far-reaching non-refundable aid projects is the one funded by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. This project not only focuses on providing emergency relief but also focuses on supporting people to restore their livelihoods and improve their capacity to cope with natural disasters in the long term.

After the initial relief phase, the project implemented support activities in five communes in Yen Lap and Cam Khe districts, the most severely affected localities. The highlight of the project was the transparent and participatory beneficiary selection process. Through village meetings with the participation of nearly 2,000 people, a list of 930 most disadvantaged households was identified based on clear criteria and confirmed by local authorities.

To ensure fairness, the Provincial Project Management Board randomly assessed 20% of the households being evaluated. The results showed that the selection process was carried out seriously and objectively. After being approved by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society , the list of beneficiary households was made public in villages and communes, creating consensus and trust in the community.

After 4 months of implementation, the project has directly and indirectly supported 5,665 people, with special attention paid to women (accounting for 58.41%). More than 1,000 people have directly benefited through household support activities and capacity building training courses. The project not only helps people overcome immediate losses but also equips them with the necessary knowledge and skills to rebuild their lives and minimize future risks.

In addition to support from international organizations, businesses also demonstrate their noble social responsibility through practical aid programs. The program "Supporting people affected by storm No. 3 and floods" sponsored by SunLife Vietnam Life Insurance Company Limited is a typical example. With a total contract value of nearly 343 million VND, the program has directly and indirectly supported 100 people in Phu Tho province. The special feature of the program is the combination of support for necessities and support for sustainable livelihoods. The Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society provided clean water tanks to 50 households in Minh Thang commune, Cam Khe district, contributing to solving the urgent problem of clean water after the flood.

The Provincial Red Cross Society has also directly implemented livelihood support activities for 50 households in Phu Khe commune, Cam Khe district through the provision of chicken breeds and animal feed. The process of purchasing chicken breeds was carried out transparently, selecting reputable suppliers, ensuring quality and disease prevention. The distribution session was organized solemnly, to the right target and received excitement and satisfaction from the people. The program also focused on communication work on clean water, sanitation and disease prevention in emergency situations. Communication sessions were organized with the participation of medical staff, providing knowledge and practical instructions to the people. Leaflets and other mass media were also used to spread the message and raise public awareness.

The non-refundable aid projects in Phu Tho after Typhoon Yagi are not only material support but also a great source of spiritual encouragement, demonstrating the sharing and compassion of the domestic and international communities. Lessons learned from this practice will continue to guide future aid and development activities, contributing to building a stronger community that is better able to respond to the challenges of natural disasters and climate change.
