According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on the day and night of May 20, all regions in the country will have sunny days, some places will be extremely hot, and there will be thunderstorms in the evening and at night. Be careful during thunderstorms because of the possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.

There are also many other dangerous weather patterns appearing during the day.

Heavy rain in the Central Highlands and the South, flash floods and landslides in Lai Chau and Ha Giang

Commenting on the rain situation, early on the morning of May 20, Deputy Head of the Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Le Thi Loan said that in the afternoon and evening of May 20, the Central Highlands and the South are forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall from 10-30mm, some places over 50mm, in thunderstorms there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. Warning level 1 of natural disaster risk due to tornadoes, lightning, hail.

Regarding the forecast of flash floods and landslides, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from 5:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. on May 20, the areas of Lai Chau and Ha Giang provinces will continue to have rain with common rainfall such as Lai Chau from 20-40mm, some places over 60mm; Ha Giang from 10-30mm, some places over 40mm.

Risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes in the above provinces, especially in the districts: Muong Te, Nam Nhun, Phong Tho, Sin Ho, Tam Duong, Tan Uyen, Lai Chau city (Lai Chau province); Bac Quang, Hoang Su Phi, Bac Me, Quang Binh, Vi Xuyen (Ha Giang province). Warning level of natural disaster risk due to flash floods, landslides, land subsidence due to heavy rain or level 1 flow.

Flash floods and landslides can have very negative impacts on the environment, threaten people's lives; cause local traffic congestion, affect the movement of vehicles; destroy civil and economic works, causing damage to production and socio-economic activities.

The hydrometeorological agency reminds people to regularly monitor forecast and warning information on the website of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting at nchmf.gov.vn, provincial, municipal and regional hydrometeorological stations. At the same time, regularly update the latest hydrometeorological forecast information on the official mass media of the Central and local levels to proactively respond, and at the same time recommend that the authorities in the affected localities pay attention to reviewing the flow bottlenecks and vulnerable locations in the area to take preventive measures.

According to the guidance of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), in the face of the above situation, affected areas should closely monitor developments of heavy rain, floods, flash floods, landslides, and promptly and fully inform authorities at all levels and people to proactively prevent, respond, and minimize damage.

Localities deploy shock forces to inspect and review residential areas along rivers, streams, and low-lying areas to proactively organize the relocation and evacuation of people in areas at high risk of deep flooding, flash floods, and landslides; organize forces ready to control and direct traffic, and place warning signs, especially through culverts, spillways, and areas with deep flooding and fast-flowing water; proactively arrange forces, materials, and means to overcome incidents, ensuring smooth traffic on main traffic routes when heavy rain occurs...

From 11pm on May 19 to 4am on May 20, Lai Chau and Ha Giang provinces had moderate to heavy rain, such as: Tan Lap 1 (Ha Giang) 150.6mm, Ban Ngan (Ha Giang) 133.8mm, Nam Nhun (Lai Chau) 141.8mm, Ta Leng (Lai Chau) 88.8mm...

Soil moisture models show that some areas in the above provinces are close to saturation (over 85%) or have reached saturation.

Beware of dangerous weather at sea

Regarding the weather situation at sea, Ms. Le Thi Loan informed that the sea area south of the central East Sea, the South East Sea area (including the Truong Sa area) and the Gulf of Thailand are currently experiencing scattered showers and thunderstorms.

According to the forecast, on the day and night of May 20, in the sea area from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, Ca Mau to Kien Giang, the Gulf of Thailand, the southern sea area of ​​the central East Sea, the southern East Sea area (including the sea area of ​​Truong Sa), there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, with the possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind of level 6-7.

All vessels operating in the above areas are at risk of being affected by tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.

According to the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, coastal provinces and cities affected by the storm must closely monitor warning bulletins, forecasts and developments of strong winds at sea; notify captains and owners of vehicles and vessels operating at sea to proactively prevent and have appropriate production plans, ensuring safety of people and property; maintain communication to promptly handle possible bad situations.
