Recently, CEO Lei Jun announced on Weibo that Xiaomi will launch its own advanced mobile chip at the end of May. However, he did not provide further details about the chip.

“I have good news for you: Xiaomi's independently designed and developed mobile chip – XRING O1 – will be released at the end of May. Thank you for your support,” he wrote.

The announcement marks a major breakthrough for Xiaomi in the smartphone market, bringing it into the ranks of companies that make their own chips, along with Apple, Samsung and Google. It gives Xiaomi greater autonomy in integrating hardware and software.

Xiaomi Makes New Breakthrough in Mobile Chip Market

Following Lei’s announcement, some information regarding the first Xiaomi mobile model equipped with the new chip has appeared. Rumors suggest that the device will use a 6,100mAh battery, a 50MP triple-lens camera cluster, a 6.73-inch screen, and a resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels.

This is not the first time Xiaomi has tried its hand at mobile chips. The company started designing its own chips in 2014 and announced the Pengpai S1 in 2017. However, in 2019, the company shifted to less sophisticated chips such as image sensors and power management units due to the high cost of developing mobile chips. Sources revealed that efforts to develop mobile chips were resumed in 2021.

Xiaomi is said to be using its own mobile chips for high-end electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets. Until now, Qualcomm has been the company's main chip supplier. The most high-end phone model - Xiaomi 15 Ultra - uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip.

The news of Xiaomi’s new chip comes amid growing competition in China’s mobile market. Rivals like Huawei and Apple are using their own chips to create tight ecosystems and improve user experience. But data shows the market is dominated by domestic brands. Sales of foreign smartphones fell nearly 50% in March, to just under 1.9 million units.
