According to Bloomberg , FuriosaAI is one of the few Asian startups that Meta has been eyeing. Negotiations began earlier this year. However, both companies declined to comment to the press when asked about the deal.
FuriosaAI, led by June Paik, a former senior executive at Samsung and AMD, is developing processors specifically for AI inference. Its flagship product, RNGD, is designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s AI chips as well as rivals like Groq, SambaNova, and Cerebras Systems.
The processor is manufactured on TSMC's 5nm process, using HBM3 memory from SK Hynix. The company currently has about 150 employees, 15 of whom work at its Silicon Valley facility. Several partners have already begun testing the chip, including LG AI Research (the AI arm of LG Group) and Saudi Aramco.
Meta is ramping up its investment in AI infrastructure to compete with OpenAI, Google, and formidable newcomers like DeepSeek (China). CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he will spend up to $65 billion by 2025, including on data centers and recruiting AI talent. He asserted that Meta could spend “hundreds of billions of dollars” on this segment in the long term.
In addition to the acquisition, Meta has also developed its own AI chips to serve internal tasks such as advertising and content ranking on Facebook and Instagram. Last year, the company announced an upgraded version of its in-house inference processor line.
Shares of DSC Investment, a major investor in the startup, fell more than 16% in early trading Monday after FuriosaAI rejected Meta, after its value had surged on rumors of an acquisition.
FuriosaAI is preparing to raise an extended Series C round, which is expected to close within a month and is likely to exceed its initial target. The IPO is also part of the company's long-term development plan.
