On January 23, talking to a doctor at Military Hospital 121 ( Can Tho ), Ms. PTN (61 years old, living in Tra On District, Vinh Long) said that her left knee joint is no longer painful, she can eat, sleep and walk almost normally.
"I have been sick for 12 years, suffering a lot of pain, having difficulty walking, and my left leg is deformed. Over the years, my family took me to many places for treatment but it did not work. Now I am healthy, I am very happy," Ms. N. shared.
Specialist 2 Doctor Le Van Cong and female patient
Meritorious physician, specialist 2 Nguyen Minh Thuan, Director of Military Hospital 121, said that patient N. was admitted to the hospital on January 10 in a state of almost being unable to walk on his own. Through paraclinical results, the patient was diagnosed with severe left knee osteoarthritis, with indications for knee replacement.
Preoperative knee x-ray
Knee joint after surgery
On January 16, specialist 2 Le Van Cong, head of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery, and his team performed surgery on patient N. for about 2 hours, removing the entire damaged left knee joint and replacing it with an artificial knee joint. After the surgery, patient N. no longer had any pain, could bend and extend his knee well, and was soon able to walk on his own. On January 25, the patient will be discharged home to continue physical therapy.
According to specialist 2 Le Van Cong, this case is quite complicated because the disease has been going on for a long time, the patient is over 60 years old and has underlying diseases. During the treatment process, the doctor must ensure the balance of the ligament system to help the knee joint function smoothly, effectively, and without causing pain. If patient N. does not have proper and timely artificial knee replacement surgery, the disease will become more severe, leading to muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, disability, etc.
