Bac Lieu Student Dormitory with construction investment of more than 80 billion VND for over eight years has almost no one living there.

The student housing project has a total estimated budget of 260 billion VND, invested by the Department of Construction of Bac Lieu province, completed in 2015 with two buildings. The total investment capital of the project is 81 billion VND.

The building is located in Ward 1, Bac Lieu City, has 150 rooms, accommodating about 1,200 students.

According to the design, each room is fully furnished with a bed, wardrobe, and desk. The building has two managers and a security guard. The expected rental price for students is 100,000 VND per month.

After receiving the handover, the Bac Lieu Province Housing and Land Fund Development Center repeatedly called on university and college students to move in, but very few came. In 2015, there were 6 students living in the building, but most of the time there were no students living here.

In mid-2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, Bac Lieu province requisitioned this building to quarantine people returning to the locality from abroad and other places. After being used for a short time, the building was abandoned again.

Currently, although Bac Lieu College of Economics has built a campus right next door, students of this school do not need to live in this dormitory. The surrounding area is overgrown with grass, and some items have deteriorated.

Mr. Le Quang Phuc, Deputy Director of the Center for Housing and Land Fund Development of Bac Lieu Province, said that because there are very few students renting, the center sometimes has to compensate for operating costs. The reason, according to Mr. Phuc, is that the number of students studying in the province is small, some schools have their own dormitories, which are more convenient for students. In addition, many students want to stay outside to live freely.

"In the long term, we will propose that the province consider converting the function because leaving it like this is a waste," said Mr. Phuc.

In the immediate future, the People's Committee of Bac Lieu City would like to borrow this dormitory area to relocate its affiliated agencies here to work, while waiting for the construction of a new administrative area.
