Construction technology from large prefabricated panels has been researched and applied in Vietnam since the late 1960s, then strongly developed in the 1970s of the last century. Initially, it was a frame-beam structure system with precast floor panels, then large panel assembly technology became popular, with applications in large collective housing areas such as Giang Vo, Thanh Cong, Kim Lien, Van Chuong, Thanh Xuan, Nghia Do... ( Hanoi ) and some residential areas in Hai Phong City, Viet Tri, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An...

According to experts, the advantage of large-panel precast concrete is to help reduce construction costs, reduce management costs and arising costs during the production process, and most importantly, the construction progress is fast. This technology can continue to be used in the future, but it is necessary to pay attention to better control of construction quality and construction maintenance.

According to Dr. Tran Ba Viet, Vice President of the Vietnam Concrete Association, the construction of social housing projects today requires high-performance and high-performance construction materials to reduce the load on the project, speed up construction progress, thereby saving time and costs.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) technology has opened a new page in viaduct construction since 2022, followed by applications in elevated road construction and expressway systems. In addition, UHPC is increasingly popular in Vietnam, and is even expected to make an important contribution to the goal of "Building at least 1 million social housing apartments in the period of 2021 - 2030".

UHPC has many outstanding advantages compared to conventional reinforced concrete such as: Improved crack resistance, impact toughness, viscous damage, wear resistance, and reduced porosity. In particular, UHPC also has the ability to reduce shrinkage and creep, and may not require the use of reinforcement; has the ability to use more technologically efficient solutions (for example, thin-walled structures, structures without distributed reinforcement, indirect reinforcement or transverse reinforcement); reduces labor costs for reinforcement work, while increasing the level of mechanization and automation of structural production; fast construction, can be mass produced; UHPC structures have a long life, low maintenance costs; reduce resource use, reduce carbon emissions...

Architect Pham Thanh Tung, Chief of Office of the Vietnam Association of Architects, said that using green building materials for buildings in general and social housing in particular will help minimize the impact on the natural environment and reduce waste generation. Green materials (including straw) also stimulate architects to be creative, find new solutions that are useful and friendly to the environment and people, promote the transition to a safer and happier way of living and working... in which the application of large-panel concrete assembly technology needs to be considered and developed.

According to Architect Pham Thanh Tung, over time, large-panel precast concrete has increasingly affirmed the superiority of the product. The development and application of large-panel precast concrete in social housing projects is also in line with the Government 's policy of developing low-cost and high-quality social housing to meet the increasing demand for housing for low-income workers across the country.
