When the flood season arrives, Tram Chim National Park ( Dong Thap province) seems to put on a new coat. Clusters of lotus and water lilies grow along the canals, and the sedge meadows have recovered and flourished. The melaleuca forest sprouts new buds, giving off a distinctive fragrance. Many bird species gather to nest and breed.

All of this creates a vibrant and captivating natural landscape, with lush green carpets of forest, dotted with red, yellow, purple, and white flowers, and flocks of birds circling around the melaleuca trees.

During this season, the number of tourists visiting Tram Chim National Park is also higher than at other times of the year.

According to the Tram Chim National Park Conservation Center, nearly 100 hectares of sedge communities have now been restored and are producing tubers very well in the core area of the park.

Prior to the dry season, Tram Chim National Park implemented various measures such as proactive grass burning, water level regulation, and soil pH control to restore the park's ecosystem.

Dr. Tran Triet, director of the Southeast Asian Crane Conservation Program at the International Crane Foundation, who has spent many years working with Tram Chim National Park on ecosystem restoration, explains that for the sustainable development of melaleuca forests, seasonal water regulation is necessary to allow the roots of the melaleuca trees to develop, helping native plant species recover and thrive naturally.

"It's been a long time since we've seen white water lilies growing so abundantly along the canals in Tram Chim National Park. This species prefers acidic water. This shows that the water environment has improved significantly, similar to the Dong Thap Muoi region of the past."

Besides the sedge grasslands, the melaleuca forest ecosystem is also strongly reviving. In sub-area A1, where a fire occurred in June 2024, young melaleuca trees nearly 2 meters tall have sprouted," Mr. Triet said.

According to the Tram Chim National Park Conservation Center, the number of waterbird species returning to the park is increasing, with some rare species returning to breed after many years. Typical examples include: stilt houses, crested ducks, spotted-necked teals, lotus herons, and many migratory birds that are nesting and breeding here.

The aquatic ecosystem is also more diverse. Characteristic aquatic species of the old Dong Thap Muoi region, such as purple-stemmed water lilies, yellow-stemmed water lilies (egg-shaped algae), and white water lilies, have reappeared.
