At the regular press briefing in December 2025, held on the afternoon of December 11th, Mr. Vo Van Len, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, provided information on waste management in the context of the rapid tourism growth in the Phu Quoc special economic zone.

According to the Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, the total amount of solid waste generated by residents in Phu Quoc is currently about 160 tons/day and 36.7 tons/day from tourists . Of this, urban waste accounts for about 104 tons/day; rural waste and tourist waste are both collected and transported at a high rate.
All waste in Phu Quoc is transported to the temporary Dong Cay Sao landfill for processing. Since March 2024, Phu Quoc has put into operation a waste treatment line with a capacity of 250 tons/day and is continuing to invest in new lines to meet the daily waste generation.

However, the biggest challenge currently is that Phu Quoc does not yet have an official waste treatment plant, so the collection and processing of generated and accumulated waste remains difficult, especially during the rainy season. Leachate from temporary landfills risks spreading into the environment.
Regarding long-term solutions, the Bai Bon Waste Treatment Plant project (total investment of VND 382 billion) - one of the 21 key projects serving the APEC 2027 Conference - has now been assigned to the Phu Quoc Economic Zone Management Board as the investor.

During the implementation process, the locality selected Binh Duong Water and Environment Corporation as the investor. The investor is currently coordinating the procedures for converting forest land use to implement the project. Following directives from the central and provincial governments, projects serving the APEC 2027 Conference must be completed before June 30, 2027; therefore, progress is required to be accelerated and commitments must be met.
"When the Bai Bon waste treatment plant is completed, all accumulated and newly generated waste will be brought there for centralized processing, reducing pressure on temporary landfills," emphasized the Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province.
