In the early days of spring, we had the opportunity to accompany the leaders of the Kien Giang Association for the Support of Poor Patients and the local government of Vinh Binh commune in handing over solidarity houses to seven disadvantaged families. The houses, built according to the "three solid" criteria and costing 50 million VND each, were a long-held dream for them. Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen, residing in Cai Nua hamlet, said: "I have no land, poor health, and I work as a laborer every day to make a living. Without a house, my family lives with relatives. Now, thanks to the government giving us a sturdy solidarity house, my husband and I are overjoyed to the point of tears." Then, she placed a plate of fruit on the altar and lit an incense stick, "sharing" her joy with her deceased mother-in-law.
Mr. Huynh Van Ba, residing in Binh An hamlet, lives alone in an old, dilapidated house with a frequently flooded floor. At 100 years old, his mobility and daily activities are increasingly difficult. When the delegation arrived, he humorously remarked, "If we rebuild the house, it will be easier for me to cook, and I won't be afraid of falling." "The local authorities have offered to rebuild his house many times, but he always refused. He said he's too old, he doesn't have much time left, and he wants to give his place to someone else. But this time, seeing how dilapidated his house was, we decided to repair it so he can have a safe place to live for the rest of his life," shared Tran Thu Suong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Binh commune.
It can be said that these sturdy, solid solidarity houses are the foundation and driving force helping those in housing-difficult circumstances to stabilize their lives. The construction of these houses also bears the strong imprint of national solidarity and deep-seated compassion. This is because it is thanks to the joint efforts of philanthropists that the dream of a home for the poor has become a reality. Mr. Danh Vu Hoang, residing in Binh An hamlet, said that his family of five had previously lived in his mother's house. The house was small and crowded, and he had long intended to move out but lacked the means because he had no land and his work only provided enough to live on. “Today, thanks to the support of the government and philanthropists, my family has a home. Thank you all! I will work hard and not let down the kindness of the local community and philanthropists,” Mr. Hoang promised.
According to Vo Thanh Xuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Vinh Binh commune, “Since the merger, the commune has built nearly 30 solidarity houses, with a total cost of nearly 2 billion VND. In addition, the locality maintains many social welfare models such as: free medical examinations and medicine distribution; gift giving to the poor, zero-cost stores… We express our deepest gratitude to the organizations, individuals, and philanthropists who have accompanied the commune in caring for the work of showing gratitude and social welfare.”
According to Mr. Xuan, to ensure that these charitable houses reach the right recipients, the local authorities established a steering committee, assigning each organization and individual responsibility to the Party committee for building houses for the poor. Localities receiving housing support also effectively fulfilled their roles and responsibilities in monitoring and mobilizing the people to promote the spirit of mutual support within the community and among the beneficiary families. As a result, these solidarity houses truly demonstrate the spirit of unity and solidarity within the community, serving as a great source of encouragement to help poor households settle down.
