Scenario for Vietnam women's futsal team to win ticket to attend World Cup

After two victories over Hong Kong (China) and the Philippines, the Vietnamese women's futsal team has qualified for the quarter-finals of the Asian Futsal Championship. After two rounds, coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his team are leading Group B with the same 6 points as defending champions Iran but with a better goal difference.

The match between Vietnam and Iran women's futsal (4pm on May 11) will decide the top spot in Group B and determine the quarter-final match. Our girls only need 1 point to win the top spot in the group.

According to the results of the quarter-final round, if Vietnam wins the top spot in Group B, the women's futsal team will face the second-placed team in Group C. In this group, the two teams Thailand and Indonesia will compete for second place.

After 2 rounds, Thailand has 4 points, 3 more than Indonesia. However, in the final round, the "War Elephants" will have to face Japan, while Indonesia will face the bottom team Bahrain. On the FIFA rankings, Thailand is ranked 5th in the world , the highest in Asia, while Indonesia is ranked 17th.

However, in the 2024 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship, Vietnam's women's futsal team won 2-1 against Thailand in the final to become champions. Previously, in the group stage, Vietnam's women's futsal team lost 0-3 to this opponent. Meanwhile, Indonesia lost 0-5 to Vietnam's women's futsal team in that tournament.

In the case of finishing second in Group B, Vietnam futsal will face Chinese Taipei (ranked second in Group A) in the quarter-finals. In the FIFA rankings, this team is ranked 18th, 7 places lower than Vietnam futsal (ranked 11th). In the group stage, Chinese Taipei won against Uzbekistan, Australia and lost to host China.

Only three teams in Asia have qualified for the World Cup. Therefore, Vietnam women's futsal team needs to get through the semi-finals. We will be in the same group as Iran and can meet them again in the semi-finals (if we get through the quarter-finals). In case of defeat in the semi-finals, coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang's team needs to win the third-place match.

Overall, the Vietnamese women's futsal team needs to go through at least 3 more matches (including the final group stage match against Iran) if they want to win a ticket to the World Cup. The challenge will gradually increase for our girls. However, the whole team is very determined to win a ticket to the world-class tournament for the first time in history.
