The monitor lizard that Vinh Linh District Forest Protection Department received weighed 1.7 kg, with the scientific name Varanus salvator, a rare animal listed in the Vietnam and World Red Book. The monitor lizard is a wild animal that needs to be strictly preserved and protected.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu said that on the afternoon of June 17, he discovered this animal while gardening. Fearing that the animal would attack, Mr. Hieu tried to capture it and put it in a cage. After investigating, he learned that this was a monitor lizard, a rare wild animal, so he contacted the Vinh Linh district forest rangers to hand it over.
“I didn’t know where the animal came from, but after researching it, I found out it was a species that needed to be preserved, so I immediately contacted the rangers to release it back into the wild,” said Mr. Hieu.
On the afternoon of June 17, officers from the Vinh Linh District Forest Protection Department came to Mr. Hieu's house to receive and bring the monitor lizard back to the unit, provide health care and carry out procedures according to regulations before releasing it back into the wild.
