Being listed in the evaluation report of the world's leading technology analysis organization Gartner is not only a milestone demonstrating the competitiveness, innovation and international reputation of a business, but also opens up opportunities for cross-border cooperation with the most potential markets. However, the journey to be recognized, especially for businesses from Vietnam, is not simple.

According to Forbes, the Gartner Magic Quadrant (MQ) report is considered the "gold standard" for evaluating the market position of technology vendors, whether they are veteran giants or emerging startups.

Viettel with the 5G ecosystem of Viettel High Technology Industries Corporation (Viettel High Tech) was just recognized in this prestigious report. Viettel High Tech is the only enterprise from Southeast Asia recognized in the Niche Player group - a group of suppliers with specialized capabilities, demonstrating a pioneering role in commercializing 5G Open RAN base stations.

This achievement directly confirms that if done correctly, Vietnamese enterprises will have a position on the international technology map.

From “Make in Vietnam” products to global reviews

Nearly a decade ago, when the world's telecommunications infrastructure was still dominated by a few "big guys", it was almost impossible for a Vietnamese enterprise to design, manufacture and operate a 5G core network system. But Viettel chose the most difficult path: mastering the technology from hardware, software to chipsets, instead of just importing and deploying.

The big change began to come in 2019-2020, when this telecommunications enterprise decided to deploy 5G research with the goal of mastering. In 2022, Viettel's three key products - 5G gNodeB broadcasting station, vOCS 4.0 billing system and 5G Core network infrastructure - were recognized by Gartner Peer Insights, a platform for evaluation from real users.

This initial recognition by Gartner is a testament to the objective assessment of technology solutions from global customers and partners, and also affirms that only technology solutions that are truly accepted by the market are included in the list.

After 3 years, the Vietnamese "telecommunications giant" has now been recognized at the highest level with the Magic Quadrant report. The assessment from Gartner not only proves the quality of Viettel's products, but also demonstrates the research and development (R&D) capacity and strategic thinking of a Vietnamese enterprise that has reached international standards. Viettel, from a network operator, has become a manufacturer and technology provider that can compete with global corporations.

With the advantage of being both a network operator and an equipment manufacturer, Viettel continues to build a 5G ecosystem "Make in Vietnam, Made by Viettel."

In 2021, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Minister of Information and Communications (now the Ministry of Science and Technology) emphasized the role of 5G in Vietnam's economy: "For the first time, telecommunications infrastructure has become the infrastructure of the economy. And it fundamentally changes our lives. This is the mission of 5G, and that mission rests on the shoulders of the Vietnamese ICT industry."

Now Viettel can be considered to have demonstrated its pioneering role in that journey by both mastering the new generation telecommunications infrastructure with the widespread deployment of the "Make In Vietnam" 5G system and making Vietnam one of the 5 countries in the world to master a complete telecommunications network.

On this platform, Viettel has developed an ecosystem with more than 100 services and application solutions in the fields of production, transportation, healthcare, education, energy and smart cities, bringing the power of 5G into every area of life, contributing to promoting national digital transformation.

"Open road" for Vietnamese enterprises

Gartner not only evaluates good products, but also pays attention to the overall capacity of the enterprise, especially two factors: technological vision and execution ability. Viettel is recognized for converging both.

Firstly, Viettel has a clear vision of technology. From an early age, the group identified technology not only as a business tool, but also as the foundation of national independence and autonomy. Instead of following trends, Viettel chose to develop and master core technology areas for the future: AI, cloud computing, chipsets, network security and 5G based on open standards (Open RAN). The goal is not only to provide services, but also to create digital infrastructure for the country and the region.

Second, Viettel has strong execution capabilities. In 2025, Viettel will deploy 2,500 5G Open RAN 32T32R stations nationwide, using Qualcomm chipsets that save up to 24% energy compared to traditional equipment. Thanks to the open architecture of Open RAN, Viettel has reduced product development time by half, to only 12 months instead of 24 months according to the usual process.

In particular, thanks to pioneering the application of Qualcomm's ASIC chipset in 5G gNodeB products, this enterprise is the partner with the earliest access, fastest design completion and earliest deployment among the enterprises cooperating with Qualcomm.

Currently, the Vietnamese telecommunications giant is also the unit deploying the most 5G Open RAN stations using this ASIC chipset, thereby affirming its technological mastery and position on Gartner's global 5G research map.

According to Gartner experts, recognized businesses often have to meet three criteria: real technological innovation, not just stopping at ideas; good customer experience, proven through market feedback and long-term strategy, transparency and creating positive impact on society.

Viettel has met all three criteria. The group's products not only solve technological problems but also bring specific benefits to the community: from helping businesses increase productivity to supporting cities in digital transformation more effectively.

That is why Gartner considers Viettel not only a technology provider, but also a true digital ecosystem creator.

Viettel's journey directly shows how Vietnamese businesses can achieve international recognition.

First, technological autonomy is a prerequisite. When businesses can design, manufacture and develop their own products, they control quality, security and can innovate continuously.

Second, putting people and the nation at the center. Viettel develops technology with the philosophy of “Technology for people”, meaning that technology is only valuable when it serves social development, helping people and businesses benefit.

Third, transparency and international integration. Meeting global standards, publicizing data and cooperating with prestigious organizations such as the ORAN Alliance, GSMA or Qualcomm helps Viettel stand on the shoulders of giants to step into the world.

Viettel’s journey as recognized by Gartner is not due to luck, but is the result of a long-term vision, systematic investment, a strong commitment to technological innovation and an international cooperation strategy. It is also an affirmation that Vietnam can completely compete with the technological powerhouses if it dares to set high goals and is persistent enough to achieve them.

From the first broadcasting stations to the autonomous 5G ecosystem, from gNodeB products to ASIC chipsets, Viettel has shown Vietnam's path to the world not only through commerce, but also through technology and intelligence.

Qualcomm's Deputy General Director, a company that accompanies Viettel on the journey to develop the 5G ecosystem, emphasized that Viettel was recognized by Gartner: "The technology Viettel deploys in the 5G ecosystem is very complex, requiring a lot of effort and deep expertise. Viettel's ability to do this proves that Vietnamese engineers have world-class skills. Viettel has successfully implemented it in a short time, putting the technology into commercial operation, and I believe that in the future, Viettel will expand this scale globally with the position of one of the world's leaders. Qualcomm is very proud to accompany Viettel, and I think this is just the beginning."
