The first international-scale Vietnamese Craft Village Festival

On the morning of November 1, at the Center for Trade Promotion and Agricultural Development (Agritrade), Hanoi, a press conference was held to introduce the 2023 Vietnam Craft Village Conservation and Development Festival and the 19th Vietnam Craft Village Fair in 2023, attracting a large number of central and Hanoi press agencies to attend.

Speaking at the opening press conference, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Director of Agritrade, said that this is the first time this Festival has been organized. Building on the success of the Vietnam Craft Village Fair in previous years, in 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in coordination with the Hanoi People's Committee, will organize the Vietnam Craft Village Conservation and Development Festival 2023 on an international scale. “This is an important activity to preserve, maintain, reproduce and promote the identity of traditional cultural values ​​of the nation, forming contemporary cultural features of Vietnamese craft villages, in which Hanoi's craft villages are the center to spread to other localities. Through that, it creates an environment for exchange and sharing of experiences and knowledge in production and business of craft village products; honoring artisans, skilled workers, and workers in craft villages; promoting and introducing traditional craft villages and craft streets in Hanoi and the whole country; thereby gradually promoting consumption, increasing product value and developing tourism in craft villages" - Director Nguyen Minh Tien affirmed.

Craft villages play an important role in our country's economy , especially in rural areas. The development of craft villages contributes to promoting the shift in the rural economic structure towards gradually increasing the proportion of industry and services, using and promoting resources of labor, capital and other resources among the people to develop production, business, create jobs, reduce poverty, and narrow the gap in living standards between urban and rural areas. Currently, our country has more than 5,000 craft villages and villages with crafts in operation, of which the number of traditional craft villages recognized according to the current craft village criteria of the Government is 2,008, attracting about 1.58 million workers with an average income of about 5 - 6 million VND/person/month. There are many villages that have existed for 500 to 1,000 years, becoming typical craft villages, known throughout the country and the world, such as Van Phuc silk, Dong Ho paintings, Bat Trang ceramics, etc.

Providing detailed information about the Festival at the press conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Yen, Deputy Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development, added that, unlike previous years, this year's Festival will take place with many outstanding and meaningful activities such as: Ceremony to honor artisans and skilled workers; Handicraft product contest; Traditional cultural art performance program; International workshop "Preserving and developing craft villages". In particular, a series of activities in response to the Festival chaired by the Hanoi People's Committee include: The procession of the Craft Ancestors and the Van Phuc Craft Village Culture and Tourism - Trade Week in 2023 with the theme "Van Phuc - Colors of Integration"; OCOP Product Introduction Week associated with the culture of the Southern provinces; Hanoi Autumn Festival; Hanoi International Handicraft Gift Fair in 2023 and Organizing sightseeing and experience activities at craft villages in Hanoi: Bat Trang, Van Phuc, Duong Lam, etc.

Notably, in the Festival grounds at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, there will be an International Fair introducing craft village products and OCOP products with a scale of 300 booths, displaying and introducing many typical handicraft products of craft villages and traditional craft streets throughout the country as well as agricultural products meeting OCOP standards of 3 stars or higher, products with protected geographical indications, organic products, typical products, key products and potential products of localities throughout the country.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Yen, coming to the Festival, people will have the opportunity to enjoy the creative space of Hanoi Craft Village, displaying, introducing and honoring typical handicraft products crystallized from promoting the tradition and creativity of artisans and craftsmen of Hanoi's traditional craft villages; The space for displaying and introducing international handicraft products will display and introduce typical, sophisticated handicraft products with aesthetic value, cultural crystallization of diplomatic agencies, organizations and handicraft enterprises of the following countries: Laos, Indonesia, Thailand, Russia; Space for displaying handicraft products participating in the Vietnam Handicraft Product Contest in 2023; The Heritage Craft Village Space will display, introduce and perform on-site 25 traditional crafts of 19 provinces and cities that have been included in the list of national intangible cultural heritages, typically: Traditional embroidery in Dong Cuu and Com Me Tri (Hanoi); Silver carving of the Nung people (Ha Giang), Kim Bong carpentry and brocade weaving of the Co Tu people (Quang Nam); Sai Nga conical hat making (Phu Tho); mat weaving (Dong Thap); traditional bronze casting in Che and Tra Dong villages (Thanh Hoa); Deng weaving of the Ta Oi people (Thua Thien Hue province); The regional OCOP culinary culture experience space will display and introduce OCOP products, unique cuisine of local regions as well as a demonstration area for typical handicrafts, in which, a number of typical artisans and artisans who won prizes at the Vietnam Handicraft Product Contest 2023 will be invited to demonstrate on-site some traditional crafts such as fine woodworking, embroidery, silk weaving, conical hat making, pottery, bronze making...

Also at the press conference, Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development, said that the organization of the Festival will create an environment and opportunity for exchange and interaction between artisans and craft villages, especially through which, it will help the Vietnamese craft village community learn, innovate, and learn from the experiences of other craft villages both at home and abroad to create many products with high artistic value and applicability.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Van Chi, Head of the Hanoi Rural Development Department, provided more information about the convergence and spread of this Festival's activities, not only overcoming the fragmentation and isolation in activities but also creating a series of events and activities that both preserve and develop craft villages, bringing cultural and traditional stories and increasing the value of the capital's craft villages in particular and craft villages across the country in general./.
