At this time of year, on the coffee hillsides of Son La, people are bustling with activity as they begin the harvest season. The joy of the harvest spreads throughout the villages and hamlets, blending with the pride of the farmers after years of dedication to the province's main crop.

On a coffee plantation spanning over 2 hectares in Keo Toc village, Chieng Mai commune, Mr. Hoang Van Thang, along with his family members and hired workers, are busily harvesting the ripe, red coffee berries that hang heavily on the branches.

Mr. Thang excitedly shared that his family has 2 hectares of coffee plantations, and they expect to harvest over 30 tons of fresh coffee cherries in the 2025 season, selling them at an average price of 30,000 - 31,000 VND/kg, which makes them very happy. Mr. Thang expressed his hope that from next year onwards, the price of coffee cherries will remain stable or even higher than this year. Furthermore, he hopes that favorable weather and climate will allow households to confidently invest in, develop, and expand their planting area to increase their family income.

Visiting the family of Ms. Tong Thi Duc in Muoi Noi commune, the selling price of fresh coffee cherries in the 2024 harvest season has increased significantly compared to previous years, reaching 22,000 VND/kg or more, providing Ms. Duc with a substantial income. This year, she continued to invest in fertilizers and proper cultivation techniques, resulting in higher yields and better quality, reaching over 10 tons/ha. With the coffee now ripening, the family has also hired additional laborers to harvest the cherries to supply traders.

Ms. Tong Thi Duc shared: "This year, the fresh coffee beans have a beautiful appearance, and the selling price is 30,000 VND/kg or more, so my family is very happy. The high and stable coffee prices from the beginning of the season until now have further motivated farmers to invest in fertilizers and care, preparing for the next crop to achieve higher yields and better quality."

According to Quàng Thị Phượng, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Muổi Nọi commune, the commune has been exploiting and developing its potential, strengths, climate, and soil in agricultural production. In recent years, the commune has actively converted areas of low-yield crops to concentrated, intercropped coffee cultivation. The entire commune currently has nearly 2,500 hectares of coffee, and this year, both yield and selling prices have increased significantly, making the farmers very happy.

To help people sell their products, the commune also organized a Coffee Harvesting Festival to honor the labor value of coffee growers and build the image of Muoi Noi commune's coffee as a distinctive and key product. This contributed to promoting economic , tourism, cultural, and social development in the locality. Along with that, the commune also guided people to promote the application of science and technology in coffee production towards high-quality, commercial production; building in-depth production, processing, and consumption chains to improve the economic efficiency for the people.

With a total area of ​​over 30,000 hectares and an average annual production of 40,000-50,000 tons, Son La province has the largest area and production of Arabica coffee in the country. Thanks to the application of sustainable cultivation, harvesting, and processing techniques, the province's coffee products are increasingly establishing their brand in domestic and international markets.

In addition, the province currently has approximately 1,120 hectares of high-quality specialty coffee, producing nearly 1,000 tons of green coffee beans per year; 141 hectares of coffee are produced according to VietGAP standards, yielding nearly 2,400 tons of fresh fruit per year. Simultaneously, it maintains 5 stable linked coffee chains and 2 high-tech coffee production areas, with a total area of ​​over 1,000 hectares, attracting more than 1,500 households to participate.

Coffee processing activities are also thriving, with more than 20 processing facilities currently operating in the province; of which, 5 industrial-scale facilities are operating efficiently, meeting the consumption needs of approximately 50% of the fresh coffee cherries produced in the province. These facilities focus on waste treatment, utilizing coffee grounds and husks to produce organic fertilizers…

This year, one of the reasons for the high coffee prices is the scarcity in the global market, while the quality of Vietnamese coffee in general, and Son La province in particular, is highly regarded and meets export standards.

According to Mr. Vuong Van Hai, Chairman of the Son La Provincial Coffee Association, Son La is one of the provinces with the largest area of ​​Arabica coffee in the country. Therefore, Son La guides farmers to grow coffee according to the correct technical procedures, ensuring cultivation in the direction of organic farming, green agriculture, and circular agriculture so that farmers can have the highest income and produce the best quality coffee to meet the requirements of the domestic and export markets. Currently, the Coffee Association and businesses in the province are also actively promoting to growers the importance of proper harvesting techniques, only picking when the percentage of ripe coffee cherries reaches 95% or more...

Furthermore, the trend of expanding cultivated area is inevitable when people see clear economic benefits. Therefore, it is recommended that expansion of cultivated area be controlled, selecting seeds of clear origin and planting according to proper procedures and techniques. Currently, Son La is focusing on new varieties such as TN1, TN2, and THA1 to suit the climate and soil, ensuring high quality, stability, and long-term sustainability.
