Lao Cai Provincial Department of Tourism said that due to the impact of natural disasters, local tourism suffered heavy losses with the number of visitors and revenue falling sharply. During the week when storm No. 3 made landfall from September 6 to September 12, the number of visitors decreased by 72% compared to the week before the storm, with nearly 66,000 arrivals. Total revenue from tourists reached VND229 billion, down 71% compared to the previous week. The number of visitors booking tours and rooms in September was almost all canceled, revenue decreased by about 80% compared to the same period in 2023. Damage related to the tourism sector is estimated at about VND15 billion.
To promptly restore tourism activities, Lao Cai Department of Tourism is researching and developing tours associated with volunteer activities. This is a form of tourism experience combined with charity activities, supporting people and villages damaged by natural disasters. It is expected that 4 tours will be put into operation in September.
Three-day, two-night tour to discover Sa Pa , by car and on foot. Visitors will explore Sa Pa night market, stone church, tennis court, Sa Pa lake, visit Lao Chai village, Ta Van - the long-standing residence of the H'Mong and Giay people. Conquer the "roof of Indochina" by cable car; enjoy ethnic cuisine. During the trip, visitors will move to the center of Muong Hoa commune, the place most affected by storm Yagi. The group can visit and give gifts to affected households and schools, help people clean up their houses and public works.
The tour to explore Bac Ha market and cruise on Chay River takes place over three days and two nights. Visitors will experience a cruise on Chay River, visit Hoang A Tuong mansion, Bac Ha temple, Bac Ha night market and participate in a volunteer program to help disadvantaged students in Hoang Thu Pho or Lung Phinh commune.
On the two-day, one-night Bao Yen community tour , visitors will pay homage at Bao Ha Temple, Co Temple, visit villages in Nghia Do, and enjoy Tay cuisine. The volunteer activity in the tour is to visit and give gifts to households affected by storms and floods in Nghia Do, Lang Nu, Phuc Khanh commune.
On the three-day, two-night tour to explore Muong Hum - Y Ty - Lung Po , visitors will enjoy local specialties; visit tourist attractions such as Y Ty, Lao Chai, Thien Sinh bridge; and give gifts to students in A Lu, Nam Pung.
In addition to new tour programs, Lao Cai Department of Tourism has proposed that the Provincial People's Committee have a plan to invest in an exhibition of photos and documents on the damage and prevention of storm Yagi at the Provincial Exhibition House, both as documents and to provide visitors with an overview of the damage after natural disasters in Lao Cai. Tourism promotion activities will continue to be carried out from now until the end of the year, including the 2024 Lao Cai International Tourism Fair and the "Northwest Brocade - Colors of Lao Cai Brocade" Festival. The programs will be organized with appropriate scale and content after the impact of storms and floods.
On September 13, the People's Committee of Sa Pa town reopened tourist attractions after the storm, requiring units and destinations to ensure safety for visitors. The reopened attractions include the Sun World Fansipan Legend cable car tourist area, Ta Phin rock garden, Bac waterfall, Green valley, Hong Mong Mo garden, Suoi Vang - Tinh Yeu waterfall, Ham Rong mountain and Cat Cat village.
Traffic routes connecting tourist destinations such as Sa Pa, Bac Ha, Y Ty in Bat Xat district have also been repaired.
