Fearing theft, a durian garden owner in Gia Lai installed electric traps around the garden. This action led to the death of a teenager who entered the garden to steal durian.
On September 20, Chu Se District Police, Gia Lai Province, announced that they were temporarily detaining Nguyen Khac Dat (born in 1976, residing in Bong village, Ia Tiem commune, Chu Se district) to investigate the murder.
Previously, Nguyen Khac Dat installed an anti-theft electric trap to protect his durian garden.
On the afternoon of September 17, Rlan D. (born in 2009) and Kpuih A. (born in 2008), both residing in Bong village, Ia Tiem commune, invited each other to steal durian from Dat's garden.
Kpuih A. was outside keeping watch, D. sneaked into the garden to steal fruit but got caught in the electric wire that Dat had set up to prevent theft, leading to his death. Kpuih A. waited outside for a long time but did not see his friend come back so he went home.

At noon on September 18, Dat went to visit the garden and discovered that D. was dead. Afraid that someone else would discover it, Dat took the victim's body to a coffee plantation in the garden next door (about 2km from the scene) to hide it.
At 3:00 p.m. the same day, Mr. Rlan Hloi (living in the same village of Klu) went to work and discovered D.'s body under a coffee tree, so he reported it to the police.
Through examining the scene and collecting evidence, Chu Se District Police have decided to temporarily detain Nguyen Khac Dat to serve the investigation.
In response to the above incident, authorities also warned people not to use electric traps to prevent theft because this is a violation of the law, can cause serious consequences and will be severely punished.
