Create Facebook page impersonating a monk to call for charity

On September 27, according to information from Thua Thien Hue Provincial Police, the authorities arrested Le Trung Thanh (40 years old, residing in Loc An commune, Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue) for fraud and property appropriation.

According to the police, around December 2021, Le Trung Thanh created a Facebook account "Mai Am Tinh Thuong" impersonating monk TT, who regularly does charity work, is reputable and has many supporters.

Thanh went online, copied articles calling for support for people in difficult circumstances in Thua Thien Hue province, changed the account number to receive money and posted it on groups.

From December 2021 to February 2023, Le Trung Thanh defrauded hundreds of victims across the country and appropriated more than 200 million VND.

When discovered and denounced by many people on social networks, the subject locked the account and created other fake Facebook accounts to sell goods and airline tickets online.

Between February 2023 and February 2024, Le Trung Thanh continued to defraud dozens of people, appropriating about 200 million VND.

The total amount of money that this subject appropriated from the scams was more than 400 million VND, for personal spending purposes.

The Investigation Police Agency of Thua Thien Hue Provincial Police is continuing to consolidate the case file to strictly handle it according to the law.
