“Flip Side 8: The Sun’s Arms” is the latest film by director Ly Hai, continuing the family theme from part 7. However, the film did not achieve the same sales growth as the previous film and faced direct competition with a formidable opponent.
The 8th film of the "Flip Side" series continues the theme of healing generation gaps and family affection like part 7. However, some viewers think that the film is not really attractive.
Observer and film writer Nguyen Phong Viet believes that part 8 has a story and emotions, with innovation compared to most of the series. But at the same time, the film's storytelling is not new, despite the heavy investment in pre-production through large scenes, multi-dimensional and multi-layered characters, and requires a lot of time for actors to practice dancing...
“To succeed in changing, director Ly Hai needs time to develop his strengths and moderate his weaknesses. I believe this is a lesson for Ly Hai regardless of his next direction,” this observer commented.

In addition, Mr. Phong Viet said that "Lat mat 8" also faces great competition from the film "Tham tu Kien." According to him, "Tham tu Kien" brings together the inner strength and experience from Victor Vu's 20-year career, creating an explosive work and setting a new standard for this film genre in Vietnam. The film reached the 100 billion VND mark one day after "Lat mat 8" and is gradually increasing its screenings compared to its competitors.
According to data from Box Office Vietnam during the April 30-May 1 holiday, audiences went to see the two films “Lat mat 8” and “Tham tu Kien” across the country. However, Ly Hai’s film won the strongest sympathy from audiences in the West, while Victor Vu’s film attracted more viewers in the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

On the other hand, “Flip Side 8: The Sun’s Arms” is also raising suspicions about irregularities in screening times. On May 5-6, many Facebook users said that through the Momo app, they discovered that many seats were reserved but only distributed around the good seats.
Accordingly, there were shows showing the top rows such as A, B, C were completely filled, creating doubts among the audience. Some people said that when they arrived at the theater, they did not see as many audiences as the early booking system showed.
In response to some questions, a representative of the independent statistics unit Box Office Vietnam said that the system scans data every half hour. If the seat is not paid for, it will not affect the statistics of this unit.
Sharing with the press on May 5, some theaters such as Lotte and Cinestar said they did not lock screenings. Reporters are continuing to contact other theaters.
In terms of revenue, the film “Lat mat 8” has a slower growth rate compared to Ly Hai’s previous films. The previous parts 6 and 7 both earned 100 billion VND after less than a week of release, also according to statistics from the above platform.
In 2023, “Lat mat 6” was released at the same time as “Con Nhót mot chong” but far surpassed it in terms of box office performance. The film surpassed the 300 billion VND mark in revenue after more than 8 days. In 2024, “Lat mat 7” held a unique position when there was no competitor released at the same time, earning 100 billion VND after 3 days of screening, 200 billion VND after 6 days, exceeding 300 billion after 11 days and earning 400 billion after 3 weeks.
Compared to these two achievements, "Flip Side 8" increased slowly when it surpassed the 100 billion VND mark after 6 days of release (including 3 days of early release)./.
