Ceremony to welcome the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni at Tan Son Nhat airport

On the morning of May 2, at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha solemnly held a ceremony to welcome the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni - the national treasure of India, accompanied by Mr. Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary and Religious Affairs of India, who flew to Vietnam on an Indian military plane.

Welcoming the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni were Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha; Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon, Deputy Supreme Patriarch, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, and other dignitaries of the Council of Patriarchs and the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.

Mr. Dao Ngoc Dung, Minister of Ethnic Minorities and Religions; Mr. Duong Ngoc Hai, Permanent Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee attended the welcoming ceremony.

On May 1, at the National Museum in New Delhi (India), the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, in coordination with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and the Vietnamese Embassy in India, solemnly held a ceremony to welcome and bring the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni to Vietnam, on the occasion of the 2025 UN Vesak Festival taking place from May 2-21 in Vietnam.

This is the first time that the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni from India have been enshrined and worshipped in Vietnam.

After the welcoming ceremony at Tan Son Nhat airport, the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni were brought to the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City - campus 2, the venue for the 2025 UN Vesak Festival.

After that, the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni will be invited to be enshrined at Thanh Tam Pagoda (Binh Chanh District) for Buddhists and the public to worship from May 3-8 (the morning of May 6 is reserved for delegates attending the Vesak Festival to worship).

It is expected that the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni will be carried and displayed for Buddhists and the public to worship at the Ba Den Mountain National Tourist Area; Quan Su Pagoda (Hanoi) - the headquarters of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and at Tam Chuc Pagoda, Ha Nam province.

The 2025 UN Vesak Celebration will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from May 6-8 with the main theme "Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Wisdom for World Peace and Sustainable Development".

According to the Organizing Committee of the 2025 UN Vesak Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, there will be about 1,200 delegates from 85 countries and territories around the world, including dozens of delegations of heads of state and leaders of countries attending the Festival.

The UN Vesak Festival has been held three times in Vietnam, in 2008 in Hanoi, 2014 in Ninh Binh province, and 2019 in Ha Nam province.
