At the end of the group stage of the AVC Nations Cup 2025, Vietnam was the only team that had not lost a single set. The team won all four matches with the same score of 3-0. But that was when coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team had not faced worthy opponents.
Indeed, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, India and Australia are all teams whose quality cannot be compared to the Vietnamese women's volleyball team. Therefore, in some matches, the home team did not even field their strongest lineup.
It was not until the semi-finals that the Vietnamese women's volleyball team faced a real challenge, Kazakhstan. This could be considered an early final of the tournament, as both teams are championship candidates.
In Group B, Kazakhstan had a near-perfect run. They won all their matches until the last match, when they surprisingly lost 0-3 to the Philippines. This defeat pushed them to second place in the group and forced them to face Vietnam.
Last year at the AVC Challenge Cup (the predecessor of the AVC Nations Cup), the two teams also met in the group stage and then the final. The winner of both matches was the Vietnamese women's volleyball team. Therefore, it is not too surprising that the home team is rated higher.
On the world rankings as of June 12, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team has risen to 28th place. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan has dropped to 31st place. However, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team cannot be complacent.
Regardless, their opponents are strong contenders with a well-balanced squad. The winner of this semi-final will almost certainly have their hands on the 2025 AVC Nations Cup title.
The match between the Vietnamese women's volleyball team and Kazakhstan will take place at 5:30 p.m. The other semi-final match between Chinese Taipei and the Philippines will begin at 8 p.m.
The three teams India, New Zealand and Mongolia will compete in the rankings from 9 to 11. Of which, Mongolia, with its 5th place in Group A, will be given a wild card to go straight to the 9th place match. India and New Zealand will face each other, with the losing team being determined to be ranked 11th. The winning team will then face Mongolia to determine the 9th and 10th place overall.
All matches of the AVC Nations Cup 2025 will be broadcast on On Sports platforms. Match start times may be later than scheduled due to extended matches.
