Improved quality, but not yet attracting audiences
“Trang Quynh nhi: The legend of Kim Nguu” will be shown in theaters nationwide from June 14, right after “De Men: Adventure to the Swamp” - another Vietnamese animated film, which will be shown in theaters from May 30.
The 98-minute “Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of the Taurus” tells the story of the main character, a boy named Quynh “nho” who is arrogant and always thinks he is the best. An unexpected incident occurs when Quynh’s parents are wanted because they are suspects of appropriating royal treasures.
Quynh was fortunate to have the help of his friends from the same village as Khoai and a strong, gentle "Buffalo". From here, Quynh and the children including "little" Coi, "fat" Bi, and little girl Muoi were caught up in a dangerous adventure, going through a journey full of difficulties while trying to find justice for his father and clear his family's name.
Meanwhile, "De Men: Adventure to the Swamp Village" (directed by Mai Phuong) took the crew 10 years to conceive the idea and nearly 3 years to produce.
The film was inspired by the classic children's work by writer To Hoai - Adventures of a Cricket. The director said that it was not an adaptation but only a partial adaptation because the original story was written by the author in chapters, with a long story.
If the film “De Men: Adventure to the Swamp” (female director Mai Phuong) received good reviews for its modern techniques, vivid images and profound humanistic messages, then “Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu” by director Trinh Lam Tung was evaluated for its meaningful plot, images rich in cultural identity, folk art...
Although there are many positive points and the two projects were released in the summer to attract young audiences, it is clear that at the present time, the two projects have not received many positive results in terms of revenue.
“De Men: Adventure to the Swamp” earned more than 19.3 billion VND (as of the afternoon of June 17). However, revenue began to show signs of decline as foreign blockbusters were continuously released.
After two days of early screening, “Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu” earned 940 million VND. Up to now, this animated film has shown signs of slowing down and has only reached 1.1 billion VND in revenue, as of the afternoon of June 17.
This revenue shows that although Vietnamese animated films have improved in content, techniques, and incorporated meaningful lessons, they are still not well received by audiences in theaters.
The dream of a hundred billion is still too difficult
Compared to the world's film powerhouses, Vietnamese animation still has many limitations. Therefore, it must be recognized that although there are many good quality Vietnamese animation films released in theaters, it is not easy to attract audiences because of the huge competition.
Obviously looking at the theatrical release schedule, the two Vietnamese animated films have to compete with the animated film “Doraemon 44” - a work that has surpassed the hundred billion mark at the Vietnamese box office and is still attracting attention in theaters.
Vietnamese animated films are at a disadvantage in the competition in theaters because they have not yet created their own brand. Films such as Doraemon, Conan... have all had a large fan base from the comics to the movies for many years. Meanwhile, Vietnamese animated projects are still gradually conquering the audience, facing many difficulties to affirm their position in theaters.
In addition, the media effects as well as promotional factors of animated films are still limited, which leads to revenue being somewhat affected.
However, in all fairness, although the story Vietnamese cartoon Reaching hundreds of billions in theaters is still a dream and a challenge for filmmakers, but there are still good signs because domestic producers have begun to pay more attention to this genre.
After “De Men: Adventure to the Swamp” and “Trang Quynh nhi: Legend of the Taurus”, Vietnamese cinema will soon have “Wolfoo & The Race of the Three Realms”.
The continuous release of Vietnamese animated films in theaters is a good sign for the film market in general. The increasing quantity and quality of films will help audiences have a more open and positive view of Vietnamese animated films. And from there, filmmakers can fully expect to achieve higher revenue, and the Vietnamese film market will have more quality animated film makers.
