Application of science and technology in environmental protection

Determined not to trade the environment for economic development, in recent years, Quang Ninh has continued to promote the application of science and technology to improve the living environment, ensuring sustainable development.

The province has many policy mechanisms to encourage individuals, organizations and businesses to invest in research, transfer and application of environmentally friendly scientific and technological advances; application of artificial intelligence in the field of natural resources and environment; development of green economic models, circular economy, low emissions, low carbon, combined with prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, and adaptation to climate change.

From 2022 to now, the province has prioritized allocating scientific career funding to deploy hundreds of science and technology tasks, of which about 20% of research tasks are related to and serve the work of resource management, environmental protection, and climate change response, such as: Research on establishing a model for managing and recycling construction solid waste for application as construction materials in Quang Ninh province", research on building a model for using nano-technology organic fertilizers in safe rice, vegetable, fruit tree, and tea production in Quang Ninh province; Research on using fly ash and bottom cement at Cam Pha Thermal Power Plant to produce construction materials...

Technology for solid waste and household waste treatment has been significantly upgraded. The province has built many incinerators, regional treatment areas and waste-to-energy projects in some localities, contributing to solving the rapidly increasing amount of waste generated in urban areas and tourist areas. Along with that, models of waste classification at source and recycling have been widely deployed, connecting households, collection units and recycling facilities to minimize the amount of landfill waste.

In rural areas, the province prioritizes scientific solutions that are easy to apply at households, such as the model of "applying microbiological products to treat organic household waste". This model encourages people to sort waste at the source, treat organic waste for compost products for agriculture, and at the same time reduce pressure on the collection system and landfills. The strength of the solution is that it is a simple technique, suitable for household conditions and easy to spread in the community.

The urban transport and tourism sectors also apply environmentally friendly technology. Quang Ninh has promoted the use of electric vehicles in passenger transport, developed charging infrastructure and converted public lighting systems to LED technology combined with solar energy. Up to now, there are nearly 1,200 electric taxis in operation in the province; 235 electric vehicles operate in restricted areas and 383 electric vehicles operate on islands and border gate areas; 41 electric charging stations have been put into operation, and 20 electric charging stations are being invested in. The digitalization and modernization of the environmental monitoring network has helped management agencies grasp the changes in air quality, water quality and waste sources in real time. There are currently 171 automatic monitoring stations in the province, thereby enhancing the control of waste sources and supporting periodic and unscheduled inspections and checks. This system not only provides data for management, but also creates a foundation for applying data analysis algorithms and early warning when there are signs of abnormalities.

Not only that, Quang Ninh is also aiming for a circular economic model and “green” industrial zones. Promoting industrial zones according to ESG standards, applying recycling and energy-saving technology, contributes to improving competitiveness and attracting quality investment.

The promotion of the application of science and technology in environmental protection has been creating clear changes in resource management, pollution control and improving the quality of life of Quang Ninh people. This is the foundation for Quang Ninh to continue to maintain the image of a dynamic locality, a pioneer in innovation, sustainable development and preserving precious natural values ​​for future generations.
