Asian and Ultra Short Film Festival Celebrates Wave of AI Applications

One of Asia's largest film festivals opened on May 28 in Tokyo, with this year's event focusing on stories of diversity and the inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

On May 28, the 27th Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia officially opened in Tokyo, Japan.

This year's event celebrates the diversity of works and the wave of generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

With the theme “Creativity-Activity-Generosity,” the festival introduced about 250 films selected from 4,592 entries from 108 countries and territories.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Japanese actor and Festival Chairman Tetsuya Bessho affirmed that this event brings together creative filmmakers from around the world , contributing to sparking new connections between audiences and films, between creators and businesses thanks to the companionship of AI technology.

The event attracted a distinguished guest list, including Korean actor Oh Man Seok - star of the popular TV series “Crash Landing on You.”

Within the framework of the Film Festival, 5 main competition categories are eligible to participate in the Oscar selection round, including 3 short film categories, 1 documentary category and 1 animated film category.

The jury included prominent names such as Japanese director Shunji Iwai – known for the film “Love Letter,” Nigerian content producer Adebowale “Debo” Adedayo and actor and model Tao Okamoto.

Director Shunji Iwai shared that this year's films exceeded the judges' expectations and emphasized that making short films is very interesting because these works condense creative spirit.

At the opening ceremony, the audience also enjoyed two representative short films: the Japanese film "Extreme Flashbacker" about a convenience store employee who uses a special device to remind customers of painful memories, and the British work "Oya, Dance!" depicting the journey of a father helping his daughter connect with Africa's Yoruba culture right in London.

The official awards ceremony, including 5 categories eligible for Oscar nominations and the highest award George Lucas, will take place on June 11./.
