The specialized watercress growing area in Thuan An commune, Binh Minh town helps farmers earn high income. |
Every year, the area of land for vegetable production of Vinh Long province is about 45,000 hectares, with an average output of about 900,000 tons. Currently, vegetable production areas are planned and gradually developed into large-scale specialized areas. Farmers' products participating in the linked chains have stable output, helping them increase their income, stabilize their lives, and become rich.
Over the past years, in order to improve production efficiency, quality and competitiveness of key vegetable products in the area, all levels, sectors and localities in Vinh Long have issued and implemented many plans, programs and projects that have had positive impacts in practice, bringing high efficiency...
Expanding specialized areas
In recent years, in Ngai Tu commune (Tam Binh district), a large-scale vegetable growing area has been formed, with product consumption links, so people can feel secure in production.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Ngai Tu Vegetable Cooperative, shared: “Every day, the cooperative purchases dozens of tons of vegetables. The afternoon before, we go to the fields, or call to get information about the amount of vegetables from the people to come and pick them up the next morning. Many families leave their products in front of their houses, or our people go to the fields to help transport them.”
Mr. Nguyen Van Lap (residing in Binh Quy hamlet, Ngai Tu commune) said: “My family produces 3 hectares of fertile land. Before, every time we harvested, it was very difficult to sell the products, sometimes we had to sell them at a loss, and the prices were very unstable. Since joining Ngai Tu Cooperative, my family no longer has to worry about the output of the products, all are guaranteed, and the prices are also higher than selling at the market.”
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, the cooperative purchases two trips a day. In the morning, the goods will be distributed to the provinces in the Mekong Delta region and in the afternoon, they will be delivered to wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City. The cooperative is increasingly expanding its agricultural product purchases, helping farmers feel secure in their production and increasing their income.
Vice Chairman of Ngai Tu Commune People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Dieu said that in the past, the commune mainly produced rice in rotation with other crops. Over time, realizing that growing other crops was more economically efficient, people boldly switched to monoculture from inefficient rice fields. Currently, Ngai Tu has formed a monoculture area of more than 220 hectares; in the commune, there is an agricultural wholesale market, supplying and exchanging more than 200 tons of goods every day, helping farmers in Ngai Tu commune in particular and neighboring vegetable monoculture areas in Vinh Long in general, have stable output.
With the expanding color-cultivation areas, the leaders of Binh Minh Town have also proposed many plans to improve the quality of the watercress-cultivation area in Thuan An Commune. Thanks to the highest per capita income in the province and meeting other criteria, Thuan An Commune was recognized as the first model new-style rural commune in Vinh Long Province.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuan An Commune, Nguyen Van Hieu, said that the main income of most farmers in the commune is from watercress. On average, farmers earn more than 100 million VND per hectare of watercress per year. The area of land for growing color currently accounts for more than 50% of the commune's agricultural land, mainly for growing watercress. Every year, the commune converts 5-6 hectares of ineffective rice land to specialized color cultivation...
Raising the level of vegetable production and processing industry
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, due to the specific soil and climate conditions, Vinh Long has typical vegetable growing areas, such as: Sweet potatoes in Binh Tan district; watercress in Binh Minh town; cucumbers in Tam Binh district...
The diverse consumption market, adjacent to Can Tho City and Ho Chi Minh City is also very convenient thanks to the completed highways. Currently, the province's large-scale vegetable production areas meet the needs of the consumption markets well. Producers have a lot of experience and apply scientific and technical advances well in production, so they create products with guaranteed quality and quite stable output.
