The diary slept for 60 years

"For a long time, I have cherished the idea of writing a book about my sister. I want, in addition to a Dang Thuy Tram on the fierce battlefield, readers to be able to know a Dang Thuy Tram a schoolgirl, a Dang Thuy Tram who is carefully choosing her life path, a Dang Thuy Tram before entering the real battlefield... We decided to choose 2025, exactly 20 years since the launch of Dang Thuy Tram's Diary , also the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification; 55 years since her death, to launch the book we cherish...", Ms. Dang Kim Tram, sister of martyr Dang Thuy Tram, shared with Thanh Nien .

"In 20 years, a generation of young people has grown up and matured. Perhaps most of you do not know about Dang Thuy Tram's Diary, a female doctor who died in her youth and a story that once ignited the emotions of the entire society at that time. There are things we do not want to let fade away, the story of Dang Thuy Tram is one of those things...", Ms. Dang Kim Tram added about the motivation that made her and her relatives start working on the book.

20 years ago, the two war diaries of female doctor and martyr Dang Thuy Tram, after 35 years of hiding in the US, were returned to her family by American veterans and thanks to that, the world learned about Dang Thuy Tram's Diary . Up to now, more than half a million copies of the book have been published in Vietnam and 23 countries around the world. And now the third diary, which has a different fate: it has never been lost but has been sleeping peacefully for the past 60 years in the family's treasure trove of memorabilia, kept by her mother - Mrs. Doan Ngoc Tram until the last moment (she passed away at the age of 99, a year before the diary reached readers).

"That is the diary my sister wrote in 1965 and 1966, when she was in her final year at Hanoi Medical University and 6 months preparing to go to B. In fact, the "third diary" and other writings and memorabilia of Ms. Dang Thuy Tram only take up less than a third of the book, including 206 pages of her diary, written from October 1965 until the last page on December 14, 1966, before she sent it back to my mother to go to B... In addition to the Posthumous part, there are also my mother's memoirs, my sisters' memories of the days when the whole family was still complete. Then a little bit about the mysterious talented special forces soldier that Ms. Dang Thuy Tram had been waiting for for 7 years...", Ms. Dang Kim Tram shared.

You of the years of pain and hope

The title of Luu Quang Vu's famous poem can almost encapsulate the inner turmoil of the young girl Dang Thuy Tram a year before she entered the battlefield with endless questions about "a love that she didn't know how to tell anyone" except in her diary.

The small notebook was written in just over a year but contained a great and extremely passionate love, where personal love mixed with public love, containing the struggles of a young girl belonging to the "ideal class" ready to sacrifice herself for the Fatherland and a love full of twists and turns in the midst of war. The slender handwriting carried a huge amount of love before the challenge of waiting until sometimes hopeless when the lover chose to go towards the arrows and bullets, without a single promise.

None other than M., the "mysterious character" who was vaguely mentioned in Dang Thuy Tram's Diary 20 years ago, and this time portrayed more clearly in the unpublished diary and memories from her relatives.

After an afternoon walking with friends in the park, she wrote: "The whole country is at war, I am here in peace and quiet, but where is my beloved now? In the tunnel, in the trenches, or in prison? My dearest friend, do you know that every hour and every minute I miss you, I wish to fight with you, to shorten the suffering of separation and waiting...".

The determination to go to B with a part of the motivation being "to shorten the suffering of separation and waiting" once created an inner conflict in the young girl, when her heart was filled with too many beats: "The matter of going to B or not is still not decided. What if I don't go now? Will I cry and beg to go? Will I stay obediently? It's really awkward, what if I don't go, M? How will I live when I'm always far away from you and can't use my strength to shorten this separation?" (diary, October 27, 1965) .

Torn with many questions but that does not mean you cannot find the answers yourself. The answers are the questions themselves! Thuy Tram's diary written on February 4, 1966, 10 months before leaving for the Duc Pho battlefield ( Quang Ngai ): "There are people who say that I asked to go to B because of personal motives. I find it funny and pity those stupid people. Why don't they understand that what the revolution wants most is for people to complete both personal and public tasks. The public task here is to fight the Americans to save the country. The private task is to protect love by shortening the time and distance, fighting alongside the lover. To actively protect love, I do not mind hardship. Is that also a shortcoming? Is fighting in the fire of bullets also a shortcoming?...".

Considering that venturing into a place "without a woman's face" is also an effort to "shorten the suffering of separation and waiting", will the passionate love of this young girl with a rich life ideal find a response as she always expected? The sad pages about a love torn between ideals and personal love in the fierce bombs in Dang Thuy Tram's Diary published 20 years ago turn out not to be the final answer and will be answered in the articles, letters, and memoirs of those involved, who have known the tragic, bitter, and beautiful love story between martyr Dang Thuy Tram and the character M...
